The final tournament of the calendar year takes the PGA Tour south of the border to Playa del Carmen, Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Typically an event that doesn’t attract a strong field, things have changed this year with several big names littering the lineup. Justin Thomas headlines the field along with four-time major champion Brooks Koepka. Not surprisingly both are at the top of the odds board. The tournament made history when it debuted in 2007 becoming the first to be played outside the U.S. or Canada, and it’s grown in status and prestige over the previous 13 editions. Need to Know
There are a few things of note right off the top. First, there’s never been a Mexican winner at this tournament, though Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz are among the natives who are certainly capable. Also, just once in the previous 13 playings has the winning margin been more than 2-shots. That came in 2013 when Harris English posted a four-swing victory, and four times we’ve played extra holes. El Camaleon Golf Club opened in 2004 and has hosted every Mayakoba Classic since the event’s inception in 2007. The course played just under 7,000 yards until last year when additional length stretched the scorecard to 7,017, still short by Tour standards. It is a resort course, so there shouldn’t be too many problems for the pros, but stray too far off the fairways and trouble looms with water, forest and swampland that will impact scores. The weather will likely play a role, which it always seems to do down here, but overall it isn’t a difficult layout.
Mayakoba Golf Classic Matchup Picks
Tony Finau +115 vs. Abraham Ancer
I went back and forth on this matchup since I like both players, eventually settling on Finau because of the price. That’s not all, though. Finau has been one of the most consistent players on Tour for some time and his only victory came on the same grass in Puerto Rico a few years ago. It’s still bewildering that he has just one win and that’s likely to change sooner rather than later. He’s missed the cut twice in four starts here, but the others resulted in a top-20 finish, so I’ll take the plus-odds and hope for the best.
Brice Garnett -110 vs. Vaughn Taylor
Garnett may not be a household name on Tour, but everyone at El Camaleon knows him well. He’s made the cut in his last five Mayakoba starts placing among the top-25 each time with three of those putting him in the top-10. Every round over that span has been par or better and his scoring average is 67.80. Garnett’s play at this course is a trend that’s hard to overlook, and I’m not going to do that.
Brooks Koepka +185 vs. Justin Thomas
Catching Koepka at this price is unusual, but there is a good reason for that. Considering what Thomas has done recently it isn’t surprising to see him as the favorite, but Brooks hasn’t been bad since returning from his knee ailments and JT has to stumble at some point, doesn’t he? Koepka’s last two starts included a T5 at the Masters and a T7 in Houston, and while this isn’t a major he’s feeling good and his game shows it. It’s hard to go against JT, but at that price I’ll back Koepka.
Harris English -130 vs. Daniel Berger
English has fond memories of El Camaleon having won here in 2013 when he shot 21-under. He also earned a top-5 last year and comes in playing solid golf. He has three top-10s in five starts this season with his only MC at the Shriners where he was 5-under, so it’s hard to knock him for that. The price is steep against a strong matchup partner, but I like English’s game.
Corey Conners +110 vs. Russell Henley
Good distance and better accuracy off the tee makes El Camaleon a good fit for Conners. He’s in good form, too, with a pair of T10s in his last two starts and four top-25s in his last six. His final round scoring average in his last four starts is 66.75, so if he stays close look out.
