Memorial Tournament Golf Odds

With no Scottie Scheffler in the lineup Jon Rahm has moved to the top of the odds board for this week’s Memorial Tournament. And if fate has anything to do with it Rahm is owed one after last year’s edition. Rahm had a six-shot lead after 54 holes but had to withdraw following a positive COVID test. Thrust to the top of the leaderboard to start the final round, Patrick Cantlay and Collin Morikawa finished there with Cantlay emerging victorious for the second time in three years at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Cantlay can join elite company as only the third player to win this tournament three or more times. As always there’s a strong field in attendance with seven of the top-10 players in the OWGR scheduled to peg it up. Odds Analysis

Patrick Cantlay +1858

He caught a break last year with Rahm’s WD, but Cantlay made the most of it by winning in a playoff. And despite his MC at the PGA Championship he’s played well this season winning the Zurich Classic last month with teammate Xander Schauffele, who’s also in the field, with a pair of runner-up showings in his last eight starts. The season just hasn’t compared to last season when Cantlay won four times and claimed the Tour Championship. All that plus two wins at Muirfield Village in three years is tough to ignore.

Bryson DeChambeau +10050

I said this last week about DeChambeau before he withdrew from the Schwab, and I’ll say it again this week. We won’t catch him at this price very often and even though he backed out of the last two tournaments with an injury that limited him, he must be getting close if he’s trying to give it a go. The injury has taken its toll with MCs in three events including most recently the Masters. The odds aren’t in his favor, but when healthy DeChambeau is one of the best and if he can swing a stick the Muirfield layout will help him. And at this price he’s worth taking a look.

Matthew Fitzpatrick +2362

Which Fitz are we gonna see this week; the one that placed third in 2020 or the one that missed the cut last year? It’s safe to say he’s in a better place mentally this time around and he’s played well in the lead up with six top-10s in 12 starts. He’s not terribly long off the tee, but Fitzpatrick more than makes up for it with his accuracy and play around the green. He ranks among the top-15 in strokes gained off the tee, around the green and putting, and if he keeps that up he’s a valuable option.

Jon Rahm +1054

You have to feel for Rahm after what happened last year. On his way to defending the title he won in 2020, Rahm had a six-shot bulge after three rounds before being forced to withdraw over a COVID test. We don’t know what would have happened and we’ll never know. But I do know Rahm felt he was robbed of a win, and that’s all the added motivation he needs to make another run at the title. And it’s simply too hard to ignore that.

Will Zalatoris +3556

This course will always be something special for Zalatoris, who teed it up in the Memorial shortly after turning pro in 2018. And we’re seeing a run of form matched by his first season on Tour with three finishes among the top-six in his last four starts. He bounced back from a MC at the Byron Nelson to lose the PGA Championship in a playoff and is once again coming off a MC at the Schwab, so don’t read much into it.

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club – 7,533 yards, Par 72

Opened in 1974, Muirfield Village has hosted the PGA Tour every year since 1976. Following the conclusion of the 2020 Memorial Tournament the course underwent a significant renovation with rebuilt bunkers lining fairways and protecting greens. A number of trees were also added, tee boxes reconfigured and close to 100 yards were added making the distance 7,533 yards. Another year of growth since the remodel should make the course more difficult. It’s still a straightforward track, though, with a number of generous fairways that are open to big hitters. Greenside bunkers serve as a line of defense and can cause problems with the save rate consistently below Tour average. Most golfers agree that Muirfield is a second-shot layout that yields favorable scores with excellent ball striking and proper positioning off the tee.
