Memorial Tournament Golf Odds

Following a couple of upsets on the PGA Tour it might be time to see the favorites do their thing this week at the Memorial Tournament. Phil Mickelson was favored to miss the cut at the PGA Championship yet he emerged with his sixth major championship going off at 200/1. Last week Jason Kokrak made a move in the final round to take the Charles Schwab title with odds of +6000. Neither player is in the field but a stellar cast of characters, including seven of the top 10 in the world rankings, will go for the win at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Defending champ and OWGR No. 3 Jon Rahm opened as the betting favorite with nine players hitting the board with odds of 20/1 or shorter. Odds Analysis

Jason Day +6000

If anybody has insight to the new look at Muirfield it’s Day, who resides in the Buckeye state and is a club member. We are looking for an in and that’s it. Of course it doesn’t mean squat if Day can’t find his game. He’s been in a horrible slump since a T7 at Pebble Beach and T18 in the WGC Workday in February. Since then he’s finished outside the top-30 four times and missed the cut on three occasions, which is why he’s available at this price. But like we saw in the previous two events anything can happen.

Shane Lowry +4000

All the stats line up favorably for Lowry and if his putter cooperates he could easily climb the leaderboard. He’s played the weekend in each of his last six starts recording a trio of top-10s in that span. He finished among the top-5 in his last start at the PGA Championship despite losing strokes putting. He’s a confident player and should be able to give himself plenty of scoring chances. Taking advantage of those chances, however, is another story. But I’m willing to bet that Lowry makes the proper adjustments.

Hideki Matsuyama +2500

With his Masters win behind him we can expect to see Matsuyama concentrate on golf, hopefully. He’s enjoyed some success at Muirfield Village with a Memorial title in 2014 and two other finishes inside the top-10. The course will look different this year which is probably a good thing for Matsuyama after an MC in the Memorial last year and a T22 at the Workday. He’s another player with the metrics that should play favorably on this layout and catching a major champion at this price is something to consider.

Rory McIlroy +1400

I shied away from McIlroy at his current price, but that’s also the reason why I came back to him. He returned to his former top-ranked self with a triumph at the Wells Fargo Championship last month only to waddle through a T49 at the PGA Championship. We don’t know where his head is right now and the game has been up and down for some time. He showed us he still has it with his latest victory and he has four top-10s at Muirfield so he’s worth a looksy.

Collin Morikawa +1600

Morikawa won at Muirfield last year, though it wasn’t in the Memorial. He triumphed at the Workday the week before the Memorial shooting 19-under. The course was set up to play a little easier, but he still navigated the layout expertly. He stumbled a bit the following week, but Morikawa has proven to be savage on any course.

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club – 7,543 yards, Par 72

Muirfield Village hosted two straight tournaments last year when COVID messed with the schedule. Right after the conclusion of the Memorial the course underwent a significant renovation with rebuilt bunkers lining fairways and protecting greens. A number of trees were also added, tee boxes reconfigured and close to 100 yards were added making the distance 7,543 yards. The course played tough last year and it should be more difficult with the new look. Those who competed here last season won’t get the same view and we have no clue how it’s going to look. It remains a straightforward track, though, with a number of generous fairways that are open to big hitters. Greenside bunkers serve as a line of defense and can cause problems with the save rate consistently below Tour average. Most golfers agree that Muirfield is a second-shot layout that yields favorable scores with excellent ball striking and proper positioning off the tee.
