Many of the best players in the world are in the field for this week’s Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. There is no clear favorite to win this week and the odds indicate as much, as seven players are listed with odds between +1000 and +1600. Memorial Tournament Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The course at Muifield Village played tough last year but that was mainly due to the weather, as two years ago it played to a record-low scoring average of 70.987. Greens-in-regulation and strokes gained: tee-to-green are key stats to consider this week. The fairways are pretty easy to hit, so it is all about approach shots on this course. And putting is as normal, extremely important.
Justin Thomas -115 vs. Jordan Spieth
I continue to go against Spieth on a regular basis, as he simply can’t putt. He was 70th of 78 last week in strokes gained: putting. It was just a couple of years ago that I went with Spieth on a regular basis, but not this year. He has played well at Muirfield in the past with three top 20 finishes, but I will go against him until he figures out his putting. Thomas led the field last year in this event in average distance of putts made and finishes in a tie for 4th. I will take Thomas in this matchup.
Jason Day -105 vs. Dustin Johnson
It has not really been a great year for Johnson and he has lost his No. 1 world ranking to Thomas. Johnson is still a very good player, but he just seems off his game lately. Day leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting and he really wants to win this event in his adopted hometown. I will take Day in this matchup at a favorable price.
Rickie Fowler -115 vs. Tiger Woods
There is no question that Tiger is playing much better lately, but he is just another player right now. Tiger has been great in his career at Muirfield with five wins but at this point in their careers Fowler is the better player. He tied for 2nd in this event a year ago. I will take Rickie in this matchup.
Tony Finau -125 vs. Charl Schwartzel
Finau is 11th in the FedExCup standings and plays well almost every time out. He is 16th on the PGA Tour in adjusted scoring and he as two top 15 finishes in this event. I will take him in this matchup against Schwartzel.
Chesson Hadley -115 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
I will come right back with Hadley this week after he disappointed last week. I am not totally sold on DeChambeau and I think Hadley is the better all-around player. I will lay the small number and take Hadley in this matchup.
