To give players who didn’t qualify for the Wells Fargo Championship something to do this week the PGA Tour is holding the third of five additional events with the Myrtle Beach Classic making its debut. Most of the sport’s bigger names are absent but the full-field is comprised of numerous Tour winners, PGA veterans and Korn Ferry Tour graduates all looking for a title at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club. Ryan Fox is the highest ranked player in the field at No. 61, but No. 66 Erik van Rooyen hit the board as the betting favorite in the outright market. One player to keep an eye on is Daniel Berger. The 2021 Pebble Beach Pro-Am champ continues his return after missing nearly 18 months with a back injury. Need to Know
The Dunes Golf and Beach Club will be new to just about everyone in the field since the Tour is making its debut. The course hosted the PGA Tour Champions season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 1994-1999 but it looks drastically different after undergoing four renovations in the years since, most recently in 2023 when The Dunes prepped for the PGA Tour’s arrival. Stretched out to over 7,400 yards the course is attractive to big hitters. However, defenses were put in place. Elevated bunkers surround the greens and require players to lift approach shots with deadly accuracy or tricky putts on undulating greens are waiting. Par was reduced to 71 with the No. 8 hole now a long par 4. Opened in 1949, The Dunes was the second course built in an area now known for its plentiful, world-class golf courses.
Myrtle Beach Classic Matchup Picks
Greyson Sigg -120 vs. Alex Smalley
This is the perfect setup for Sigg to thrive. He’s done well in additional events recording a top 10 at the Corales Puntacana Championship last month followed by a T8 in New Orleans with teammate Chesson Hadley. He steadily climbed the ranks from a top amateur to Canada and won a few events on the Korn Ferry Tour. When given the chance he can close out a tournament and I think he has a chance this week based on qualifying metrics.
Daniel Berger +100 vs. Erik van Rooyen
I had both players in my outright picks so ideally a tie would be nice. Unfortunately that playoff thing would ultimately determine a winner. Berger was on a nice run until shutting it down in the middle of 2022. He returned in late January with MCs in four of his first six appearances but may have turned a corner last week going 67 or lower in all four rounds to finish T13 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. It might be too early to consider him all the way back, but at even money he’s a good risk.
Ryan Fox +120 vs. Justin Lower
Unless oddsmakers know something I don’t, which is likely the case; the odds for this matchup caught me off guard. Neither player has been killing it lately so the difference is bewildering. However, I think Fox has more upside and has competed on the biggest stage making the cut in each of his last five starts in a major. He’s the highest ranked player in the field and boasts eight international victories, so he knows how to win. And this is a field that can get him to the top.
Robert MacIntyre +100 vs. Martin Laird
A former Ryder Cup winner, MacIntyre enjoyed plenty of success on the European Tour collecting four top 25s just since August 2023. His transition to the PGA side has experienced some lows, but a T8 in New Orleans last month is a sign that maybe he’s getting accustomed to the new routine. He also earned a share of sixth at a similar field Mexico Open in late February. It seems as though events like this are where MacIntyre shines.
Matt Wallace -120 vs. Victor Perez
Much like MacIntyre, Wallace had a successful run in the European Tour earning four top 10s in his last eight starts on that circuit. Wallace does have one PGA win on his resume which took place last year at the Corales Puntacana Championship when he closed with a 66 to win by a stroke. His two best finishes this year came in his last four starts with a T17 at the Valspar and T4 last week when he opened the Byron Nelson with a 63.
