The top ranked golfer in the world is the favorite to win the gold medal at the Olympic men’s golf competition. Scottie Scheffler is accustomed to winning securing six titles on the PGA Tour already this season. However, he will be challenged by some of the best players in the world, including defending gold medalist Xander Schauffele, who broke through with his first major championship in May and won again last month at Royal Troon. The field of 60 golfers representing 33 countries will play 72 holes in a standard stroke play format starting Thursday at Le Golf National. Familiar to many in the field, the club hosted the 2018 Ryder Cup with five members of the winning European Team competing, including Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. All the favorites are listed in matchups with intriguing odds. Visit BookMaker.eu for an updated list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
The Albatros Course at Le Golf National will play shorter than it usually does with a number of holes having reduced yardage. Thus the total distance measures around 7,174 yards at par 71. It’s not long but there are hazards like tight, undulating fairways and deep bunkers. Water is also in play on the final four holes that could make the closing interesting. Having hosted the DP World Tour’s Open de France in 29 of the previous 31 playings a number of golfers have experienced the layout. Tommy Fleetwood (2017) and Alex Noren (2018) are past winners of that event who also were members on the 2018 European Ryder Cup team. Italian Guido Migliozzi won the DP World Tour event in 2022. The last 10 Open de France titlists averaged around 11-under par, so scoring could be tough.
Olympic Golf Competition Matchup Picks
Ludvig Aberg +116 vs. Collin Morikawa
At 27 years old Morikawa is a seasoned veteran compared to Aberg. He’s also playing exceptional golf making him a big favorite in this matchup. I always search for value in my picks despite it being easier to go with a favorite. I do think Aberg has a lot to offer and he’s been good this season with 10 top 20s in 16 starts. It all started after he won the RSM Classic last November. He’s been on the big stage as a part of the 2023 European Ryder Cup team.
Matthieu Pavon +113 vs. Thomas Detry
I have to back the best French player in the competition on home soil with an entire country backing him. It’s been a breakout season for Pavon earning his first PGA title in January at the Farmers Open and securing his best finish in a major at June’s US Open when he finished 3-shots back in fifth. I see this going one of two ways. Either Pavon embraces the home field advantage or the pressure is too much for him. His play at Pinehurst leads me to back the former.
Wyndham Clark +119 vs. Byeong Hun An
A win and a pair of runner-up finishes in a five tournament stretch earlier this year put Clark in a good spot to make the Olympic squad. After a bout of poor play he responded with consecutive top 10s indicating his game is back. I wasn’t happy to see him miss the cut at The Open, but links golf isn’t for everyone. And given his price in this matchup and an overall solid season, backing Clark is a good move.
Xander Schauffele +120 vs. Scottie Scheffler
I was surprised to see such a big gap in odds for the matchup between the two favorites. Both are playing exceptionally well heading in with Schauffele getting his second major championship a few weeks ago at The Open. We know of Scheffler’s exploits and adding gold to his trophy case is a priority. However, it’s not often you get the X-man at this price and he’s finished better than Scheffler in three of their last four tournament’s together.
Alex Noren -118 vs. Corey Conners
If I had researched this better I’d probably have Noren as a gold medal favorite. He’s played well at Le Golf National winning the Open de France in 2018 and finished among the top 10 two other times. He also went 2-1-0 in the Ryder Cup. He also enters after back to back top 15s at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open setting himself up for a strong showing.
