Open Championship Golf Matchups

Rory McIlroy is the favorite in the outright market to end his nine-year drought without a major title as the best golfers in the world assemble at Royal Liverpool in England for The Open Championship. McIlroy last won a major in 2014 that included a stop at this course where he bested Rickie Fowler. A month later he toppled the field in the PGA Championship for his fourth and thus far last major championship. McIlroy greased up for the final major of the season with a win in Scotland last week and faces the best the sport has with Scottie Scheffler the second favorite followed by Jon Rahm, defending champ Cameron Smith and Xander Schauffele the top five on the odds list. All five are featured in tournament matchups with several pitting them against each other. Golf’s marquee events bring an abundance of wagering options and tournament matchups. Need to Know

A regular in the rotation, Royal Liverpool hosts for the first time since 2014 and the 13th time overall. There are around 40 players in the field who pegged it up at this historic venue nine years ago, but things have changed a lot over the years. There’s a different look to the layout with par decreased to 71 and additional yardage expanding the length to just under 7,400 yards. Once the easiest hole on the course, the 10th is now a 500-yard par 4 changed from a par 5. Those who played last week at the Scottish Open got a test on the links course, however nothing compares to the challenges ahead. Not only are the elements a factor it is a major with a win defining someone’s career. For good reason there hasn’t been a repeat champ at The Open since Padraig Harrington in 2007 and 2008.

Open Championship Matchup Picks

Tommy Fleetwood +105 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

We haven’t seen a native Englander win this tournament since Sir Nick Faldo in 1992 so why not pick a matchup between hopefuls looking to end that streak. It’s hard to go against Hatton, but I’m doing it. With four finishes among the top 6 in his last seven starts, including a playoff setback in Canada, Fleetwood is playing his best golf of the season. And he enjoys a good links challenge, which he’ll get at Royal Liverpool. He geared up for it with a T6 last week that included a third round 63 at the Renaissance Club.

Jordan Spieth +126 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Only in a major can you get odds like this for a player of Spieth’s stature. He hasn’t been clicking lately in part leading to his price, but Spieth gets geeked up for majors and especially The Open. He won at Royal Birkdale in 2017 and was runner-up in 2021 part of his four top 10s in nine career Open starts. I’m betting on Spieth getting back in the game after two straight MCs with a nice payout for a matchup win.

Bryson DeChambeau +105 vs. Hideki Matsuyama

If you follow LIV Golf you’d notice that DeChambeau has picked up his play recently. He still hasn’t won since destroying the U.S. Open field at Winged Foot in 2020, but he’s been much closer. He finished his last four LIV starts among the top 13 with a runner-up at Andalucia. That coincided with his play in the last two majors with a T4 at the PGA Championship and T20 at the U.S. Open. I’ll take the plus odds any day.

Jon Rahm +133 vs. Rory McIlroy

You won’t get Rahm at this price often even if he’s matched against arguably the hottest player in the field. He was so good for a long stretch earlier in the season with four wins in starts including a tournament he withdrew from, that his recent “slump” can’t even be called that. And you know the Spaniard is chomping at the bit to bet back on the course after a rare MC at the Travelers in his last start. At this price I almost have to back Rahm.

Viktor Hovland -110 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

Making the cut is a big part of winning a matchup and few have done that as well as Hovland, who hasn’t missed the line in over a year. His goal isn’t just to play the weekend recording a win at the Memorial among his seven top 10s and 14 top 25s in 19 tournaments. It looks like I’m picking on Hatton but I’m really not rather I’m betting on Fleetwood and Hovland to continue their runs of solid form.
