Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Matchups

COVID is still out there as I’m sure Jon Rahm will let you know. The virus cost Rahm a shot at a victory last week and for the second straight year also forced the cancellation of the RBC Canadian Open, which was originally slotted for this week. Instead of taking a week off ahead of the year’s third major, the PGA Tour heads to South Carolina for the one-off Palmetto Championship at Congaree, the third tournament held in the state this season. And the field will get a stiff test from the lengthy Congaree Golf Club. With the U.S. Open a week out the field is top heavy with OWGR No. 1 Dustin Johnson and No. 8 Brooks Koepka the top two on the odds board. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of tournament matchup odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

The field is shallow once you get past Koepka and DJ, setting up for someone to sneak in and snag a victory. You also have to wonder how focused on winning the two favorites are going to be. For them it’s more about finding a groove leading into the following week’s major. There is plenty of length with Congaree Golf Club stretching to 7,655 yards at par 71. It’s what European Tour players would call a heathland course and it’s designed to play fast negating some of the distance big hitters might have off the tee. There is plenty of sand and coarse soil on the outskirts making accuracy down the fairway a key element for success. The par-5 fourth hole is the second longest on Tour measuring 645 yards while two other par-5s are over 580 yards. Hitting the ball long and straight will keep you in the game.

Palmetto Championship at Congaree Tournament Matchup Picks

Brooks Koepka +105 vs. Dustin Johnson

The two favorites and biggest names in the field had to be matched up against each other. Both are looking to find some consistency ahead of the U.S. Open and will use this as a tuneup so who knows what’s going to happen. I guess you could say that about any matchup, though. Koepka has been more consistent over the last few months and appears recovered from a knee injury that impacted his swing. A co-runner up finish at Kiawah Island removed any doubt.

Tommy Fleetwood +133 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

Fleetwood had a disappointing run on the PGA Tour with an MC at the Kiawah Island and a T46 at The Masters over his last four starts. However, a lesser field and a links-style course should be more to his liking. He enjoyed a nice run on the Euro Tour a few months ago with a T7 among three consecutive finishes among the top 26. He has a tough opponent but I like Fleetwood to dial it up from his comfort zone.

Ian Poulter -107 vs. Alex Noren

It’s been a few years but Poulter has a win on a heathland track and he’s been stellar with his approach and putting the last few tournaments. He’s made the cut in five of his last six starts punctuated by a T3 at the Schwab last time out. He’s another player whose game is seemingly a good fit for the course.

Harris English +112 vs. Sungjae Im

English started the new season on fire capped with a win in the Sentry TOC back in January. He hasn’t been as good since but he’s played the weekend in six of his past seven stroke play events finishing in the top-30 in three of them. He’s also been successful in the stat categories that are relevant for this course. I don’t often go against Im in a matchup, but Harris is finding the form from the early part of the season and at plus odds he’s a good value play.

Vincent Whaley +109 vs. Luke List

If you haven’t been paying attention to the Tour you probably missed the part where Whaley was mentioned. He’s flown under the radar the past few months making 10 straight cuts but not seriously contending for a title. That’s what makes him a solid pick in this matchup. He finished inside the top-30 in seven of those starts thanks to strong work with the irons and a superb short game. He’s another plus-odds pick with plenty of upside.
