Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Odds

Lingering COVID challenges in Canada were too much for the PGA Tour to overcome forcing the cancellation of that country’s national open for the second year in a row. In its place this week is the one-time Palmetto Championship at Congaree, which will be the third tournament contested in the state of South Carolina this season. Despite being the lead up to the U.S. Open the event attracted a decent field with South Carolina native Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka opening as prohibitive co-betting favorites. There is a drop off on the odds board after the first two with former major winners Danny Willett, Jason Dufner and Padraig Harrington well down the list. Odds Analysis

Tommy Fleetwood +2000

The course has a definite links feel to it which could benefit some of the Englishmen in the field. There are a few nestled near the top of the odds board with Fleetwood coming in at a decent price. He’s struggled a bit lately with a MC at Kiawah Island and a distant T46 at The Masters, but with this event having a lesser field and with a course more to his liking I expect better things. After all, he did go T26-T17-T7 in his last three starts on the Euro Tour.

Garrick Higgo +5000

In his first start since taking two of three titles on the ET’s Canary Island Swing, Higgo finished a disappointing T64 in the PGA Championship. He did get a taste of the length involved after expertly navigating the resort courses on the islands and I anticipate that being a momentous occasion for him. He’s performed well on lengthier courses in Europe and with a field that strongly resembles a Euro circuit event look for the young South African to make his mark.

Brooks Koepka +800

The field is top heavy and I had to go with one of the favorites, though I typically don’t do that. Both Koepka and DJ are dealing with issues leading into the third major of the year, which is likely why they are both here. For Brooks the issue is physical as he works his way through a knee problem. Apparently that wasn’t a big deal as he finished as runner-up in the PGA Championship. He has five top-10s in 12 starts this season, but he’s also missed the cut five times. With a major on the horizon he needs to get dialed in and I’m betting on that happening.

Doc Redman +6600

Redman is another player who could benefit from the watered-down field and he’s been knocking on the door of a title this season. He’s played a lot of golf this season with this being his 21st start. He opened the campaign with a podium finish in the Safeway Open and has two other top-10s. He’s played the weekend in his last three starts with a best of T9 at the Byron Nelson. The price is inviting, however Doc might be a better play in an alternate market.

Davis Thompson +12500

Several youngsters are getting a shot this week with Thompson among them. We saw the new crop of players rise up the last few years with Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland making their mark. Can Thompson do it this week? He was the No. 1 amateur in the world during his collegiate days at Georgia and he earned a T23 at the RSM Classic playing as an amateur a few years ago. He may not win this week, but the tools are there for a successful career with several victories. He’s worth dropping a few bucks on since he shows no fear on the course.

Course: Congaree Golf Club – 7,655 yards, Par 71

Another long layout awaits the field in South Carolina’s lowcountry with Congaree measuring 7,655 yards at par 71. Firm and fast fairways tend to mitigate the length, but that can be an issue with rain in the forecast. Keeping the ball straight off the tee is a necessity with waste areas all over the layout ready to gobble up wayward shots. Big hitters will have an advantage, though, with par 4s that measure over 490 yards. The par 5s are monsters with all three stretched to over 580 yards with the fourth hole tapped out at nearly 650 yards. Early forecasts have rain every day which will affect the course and could shorten the field considering a major championship is slotted for next week. Stay tuned.
