PGA Championship Golf Matchups

The major championships bring out the best players in the world and a plethora of wagering options. And guess what? There’s no shortage of either for this week’s 105th PGA Championship. A full-field of world class players assembles at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY with Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm neck and neck for the top spot on the outright betting board. However, with the biggest names in the sport pegging it up it’s really anybody’s game. As of Tuesday 99 of the world’s top 100 were scheduled to tee of starting Thursday with Justin Thomas back to defend his title. The tournament returns to Oak Hill for the first time since Jason Dufner posted a 2-shot victory in 2013. A complete list of matchup odds is available at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

Hosting for the fourth time, Oak Hill is a stock par 70 that measures nearly 7,400 yards. The course underwent a major renovation in 2020 and will look nothing like the venue that last entertained in 2013. The initial PGA Championship held here was in 1980 with Jack Nicklaus prevailing by seven swings. Shaun Michael surprised everyone winning by 2-shots in 2003 for his only Tour victory. Though the course is long and can be overpowered, there are enough obstacles posing a threat. And smallish greens make precision more of an attribute than muscle. There are upwards of 30 players ready to take a twirl around the property that also competed a decade ago. Adam Scott, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy all placed among the top-10 back in 2013.

PGA Championship Matchup Picks

Jordan Spieth +102 vs. Hideki Matsuyama

I said in the outright article that backing Spieth is a gamble since an injury played a role in his MC at the Wells Fargo and his WD in Texas last week. That’s probably also why his price is where it is. When healthy, Spieth has been consistently good with four top 4s in six starts before his WFC debacle. He also has top 10s in his last two majors with a T4 last month at Augusta. Some added incentive is a shot at the career grand slam with only the PGA Championship missing on his resume. At plus odds I’ll back Speith even with a cloud of uncertainty.

Rickie Fowler -115 vs. Tom Kim

Even during his times of struggle Fowler performed well at the PGA Championship with a T8 in 2021 and T23 last year. And with his game recovering, we could see Fowler get to the next level. Over his last nine starts Fowler placed among the top 20 eight times including three straight top 15 finishes. He’s never missed this major making the weekend in 11 of 13 career starts.

Xander Schauffele -116 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Two of the finest players yet to win a major championship going head to head is a difficult choice. The price is a little higher but Schauffele has been the more consistent player and has a history of performing well on the biggest stage. It seems like only a matter of time before the X-man gets that first major and he enters this week in fine form coming off a solo second at the WFC, his third straight top 4 and fifth top 10 in as many starts.

Max Homa +125 vs. Tyrrell Hatton

There’s always a reason why a player boasts such odds like Homa in this matchup. Homa hasn’t had much success in majors while Hatton has been kind of beastly. Still, Homa has evolved into one of the top players on Tour with multiple wins this season to go along with a pair from last season. He exited a mini slump with a top 10 his last time out and you’re not going to find many players at his price in matchups with a strong field.

Adam Scott -105 vs. Patrick Reed

Reed has emerged recently in the LIV Golf League and I was leaning toward picking him in this matchup. However, Scott’s history in major championships and a recent bout of fine form has me backing the Aussie. He’s been around for the last two tournaments at Oak Hill claiming a T5 in 2013 and a T23 in 2003. He is 10 for 10 this season going T8-T5 in his final tune-ups ahead of this week.
