PGA Championship Golf Matchups

The major championships bring out the best players in the world and numerous betting options. There’s no shortage of either for this week’s PGA Championship. A full-field of over 150 golfers will assemble at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. with Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm neck and neck for the top spot on the PGA betting board. However, with the biggest names in the sport pegging it up it’s really anybody’s game. And that also presents a number of intriguing tournament matchups. We will have a new champion since last year’s winner Phil Mickelson is not in attendance. We could also have an old new champ with Tiger Woods in the field. When Southern Hills last hosted this tournament in 2007 Woods claimed a 2-shot victory crown. A complete list of matchup odds is available at BookMaker.eu when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know

Those who competed in Texas last week will see a much different and tougher layout. Our winner will get nowhere near the 26-under K.H. Lee carded last week. Woods won the last PGA here at 8-under with the winning score over the past four tournaments on this track averaging 7-under. For one, par is 70 and the property stretches to over 7,550 yards with a number of hazards. Anyone with a strong approach game should be in good shape, but that doesn’t guarantee anything. There are a few players in the field who were around in 2007. What they’ll see this week is much different. The course underwent a massive renovation a few years back with yardage tacked on, trees removed, bunkers restored and fairways widened. It’s a beastly layout and we’ll see plenty of conservative shots.

PGA Championship Matchup Picks

Scottie Scheffler -118 vs. Jon Rahm

To find value in either of the favorites I had to go with a matchup between them. And how do you pick between two of the best in the game? Well, Scheffler’s been on a major heater with four victories already this season, including the Masters, and he’s familiar with the Southern Hills layout. He won the Big 12 title here during his collegiate days and he also made headlines recently firing a practice round 64. And until his confidence wavers I’m backing Scheffler.

Jordan Spieth +100 vs. Patrick Cantlay

Spieth is another player bursting with confidence and his game looks like a natural fit for the course. Following a MC at the Masters, Spieth won the RBC Heritage and finished a stroke off the lead last week at the Byron Nelson. Wider fairways will help everyone in the field, but Spieth might benefit the most, which is something I’m counting on. And until he stops playing or wins the PGA, he’ll always be chasing the career grand slam. The latter is the inspiration for backing him.

Xander Schauffele -121 vs. Hideki Matsuyama

With such a strong field there are some great matchups that are tough to handicap. Based on last week’s tuneup, though, Schauffele is hard to pass on. The X-man improved his score every round at Craig Ranch closing with a 61 to finish tied for fifth at 23-under. Whatever adjustments he made during the tournament certainly paid off and I’m counting on Schauffele carrying that momentum with him.

Rory McIlroy -113 vs. Justin Thomas

It seems like all we have are matchups between the game’s best players. Both McIlroy and Thomas are coming off solid performances in their last start and the odds suggest this is a tossup. McIlroy hasn’t played a lot, but he came off his two worst starts of the season – MC at Texas Open and T33 at THE PLAYERS – to finish runner-up in Augusta. He followed that with a solo fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship and has plenty of incentive coming in.

Jason Day +119 vs. Brooks Koepka

I wanted to back Koepka given his history in majors, but it’s hard to justify throwing down on him when he hasn’t shown a glimpse of his former self for some time. I’m contradicting myself since I backed him as one of my outright picks, but I can’t back him at this price. So, I’ll do the opposite and go with Day at plus odds. Day emerged from a string of three straight MCs to finish T10 in New Orleans and T15 at the Wells Fargo. He had three strong rounds last week getting knocked down the leaderboard with a Saturday 73. I have a little more faith in Day and I like the price.
