World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is favored to win the last major of the season, the PGA Championship, which begins on Thursday in St. Louis. PGA Championship Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. The course is going to play very long the first two days, as rain has made the greens extremely soft and slow. Expect scoring to be excellent the first two days and for long hitters to take advantage. Accuracy is important on this course, as it is tree-lined and the rough is difficult. There are also water hazards in play on eight holes.
Jason Day -130 vs. Tiger Woods
The price on this matchup is too low, as Day is simply the better player at this point in their careers. Day has the length to do well at Bellerive and he also has the short game and putting to contend. Tiger doesn’t hit it straight and it is hard to see him contending on a tree-lined course in muggy conditions.
Patrick Cantlay +105 vs. Francesco Molinari
One of my longshot picks to win this week is Cantlay. He hits it a long way, as he is 19th in driving distance and he has four top 15 finishes in his last five starts. Molinari had a predicted letdown last week and I can’t see him contending in a second straight major. I am surprised at the price on this one, as I think Cantlay is the clear choice.
Webb Simpson -115 vs. Louis Oosthuizen
Simpson has top 20 finishes in the first three majors and he should thrive at Bellrive, as he is sixth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting and he leads the Tour in scrambling. I will lay the price and take Simpson in this matchup.
Rafael Cabrera-Bello -115 vs. Luke List
I think Cabrera Bello could be worth a shot to win this tournament at big odds. He always seems to show up big in majors and he has the distance to do well at Bellerive. I am a fan of List, but I don’t know that he is ready yet for the big stage.
Marc Leishman -125 vs. Xander Schauffele
Bellerive should be perfect for Leishman who seems to be hitting his stride. He has top 15 finishes in two of his last three starts and he has a pair of top 15 finishes in the past at the PGA. I am usually on Schauffele when it comes to matchups, but he hasn’t played well of late and I don’t see him turning the corner this week. I will lay the small price and take Leishman.
