Odds Analysis
Dustin Johnson +725
There is no reason not to like DJ this week, as he has power, a great short game and he putts really well. He didn’t even play that well for two rounds last week and still finished second at the Bridgestone. If he is on his game for four rounds he will roll.
Rory McIlroy +1215
I have said it many times that Rory is overvalued. He simply doesn’t win tournaments enough to be listed with odds this low. Could he put together four good rounds and win? Sure. Is it more likely he has one poor round and takes himself out of contention? Yes.
Justin Thomas +1215
Thomas looked good in winning last week at the WGC Bridgestone, but it is hard to win in consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour and not many players are good enough to win the PGA Championship twice. Thomas might just be good enough to do it, but I have to look elsewhere.
Rickie Fowler +1622
Is this the tournament that Rickie finally ends his major drought? It is hard to pick him simply because he is a lot like Rory in that he doesn’t win that often. Rickie will be a popular choice, but he simply hasn’t shown the ability to win in the clutch.
Justin Rose +1622
I have to take a pass on Rose simply because of his health concerns. He pulled out last week due to back spasms. Rose is good enough to win this event, but only if he is healthy.
Jason Day +1824
I didn’t like what I saw from Day last week at the Bridgestone. He is normally really good around the green but he struggled on Sunday. I don’t know that he turns it around this week.
Tommy Fleetwood +2600
A player who hits it straight and it not afraid of the big moment is Fleetwood. He has been in contention on the big stage a lot this year and the PGA could be where he breaks through and we get him at attractive odds.
Webb Simpson +6681
I think Webb is worth a play as a nice longshot. He rolled at THE PLAYERS and he has three other top five finishes. He is sixth on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting and he is normally accurate off the tee.
Course: Bellerive is a par 70 that measures 7,317 yards. It is a tree-lined course and considered pretty long for a par 70. The rough is difficult and there are water hazards, so accuracy will matter this week. The course hosted the BMW Championship in 2008 and it was a bit easier than the average PGA Tour course. The course tests players in a number of ways, so there is no one key stat to consider. Stokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Off the Tee are probably the best ones to look at.
