PGA Tour Betting - Farmers Insurance Open Matchups Odds

The season debut of Tiger Woods highlights this week’s stop on the PGA Tour when the gang gets together in San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open. Woods has won the event seven times and conquered the Torrey Pines South Course to win the 2008 U.S. Open. We won’t see a battle between Tiger and Phil Mickelson, however, as Lefty opted to sit this one out. All eyes will be on Tiger, though, as he tees it up for the first time since the Hero World Challenge. Defending champion Jason Day and tournament rookie Rory McIlroy sit near the top of the odds board behind betting favorite Jon Rahm. Matchup odds for the tournament contested on the Torrey Pines North and South Course are listed below.

Need to Know

We will see a multiple course format again this week with the first two rounds played over the North and South Course at Torrey Pines. A return to the standard cut after 36 holes is also in play. Players that survive to the weekend will play two more rounds on the south side, which is the more difficult layout, so guys better get their scoring on the north track. A renovation in 2001 stretched the South layout to nearly 7,700 yards, making it one of the toughest tests for the field each season. The big hitters typically do well here with the length, but high rough and thin fairways are always an obstacle. Over the last five playings the winning score has been better than 10-under just once. The North Course plays around 500 yards shorter and yields to lower scores. The field collected 12 eagles on that layout last year with each golfer playing only one round.

Farmers Insurance Open Matchup Picks

Marc Leishman +105 vs. Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is higher up the odds board, but he’s making his first start at this event as he transitions from the European Tour to the PGA Tour more full time. Of course that doesn’t mean he’s going to struggle and he indeed can be one of the top performers this week. But he is matched up with a hot player in Leishman, who has seen plenty of action in the early season. He won for the fourth time on the Tour at the CIMB Classic and also had top 10s at the Sentry TOC and Sony Open, moving him to No. 16 in the world rankings. His course form is just fine, too, with a pair of runner-up finishes and four top-10s in 10 career starts.

Xander Schauffele -110 vs. Rickie Fowler

This is another potentially great matchup in a tournament filled with them. Fowler makes his 2019 debut and hasn’t played competitively since a T4 at the Shriners in early November. And much like Tiger we could see some rust in the swing, which isn’t ideal here, especially on the south course. This is a homecoming for the X-Man, who enters brimming with confidence after wins at the WGC-HSBC Champions and the Sentry TOC in his last three outings.

Cameron Champ +115 vs. Patrick Reed

Distance off the tee defines contenders in this event, and few do it better than Tour rookie Champ, who blasts the ball an average of over 320 yards to rank second on the Tour. Champ had a nice start to his career by winning the Sanderson Farms Championship in just his second start, and he also has three other top-25 finishes this season. He had his worst showing two weeks ago at the Sony Open, but the week off should help him regain form. While the results have been strong, Reed’s current stats suggest a poor showing this week. His driving distance and accuracy are down and his GIR percentage ranks 109th. That won’t play well at Torrey Pines.
