Always a popular stop on the PGA Tour, the Waste Management Phoenix Open typically attracts a strong field and a raucous gallery. And this year is no different. Coming off a runner-up finish at the Farmers Insurance Open last week, Jon Rahm opened as the betting favorite at online sportsbooks. Defending champion Rickie Fowler is also up the odds board as is two-time champion Hideki Matsuyama. There is competition from the European Tour this week that thinned the field a little, but that won’t prevent TPC Scottsdale from throwing a big party this weekend. Odds Analysis
Hideki Matsuyama +1603
He’s had mixed results so far this season, but when Matsuyama takes the TPC Scottsdale course he transforms into a birdie-making beast. He was T12-T45 in two starts this year, but it’s his record in the desert that stands out. He won back-to-back trophies in 2016 and 2017, grabbed a runner-up in 2015 and was T4 the year before that. His two-time title defense didn’t go well with an injury forcing him to withdraw, but he returned last year to a T15. What’s not to like about his chances?
Gary Woodland +3015
That missed cut last week came out of nowhere and I’m not ready to give up on Woodland just yet. He had gone T7 or better in each of his previous four starts and was a member of the winning Presidents Cup team, so the game is certainly there. He’s also been strong in the desert backing up his 2018 title with a T7 last year. The odds may have dropped a bit, but Woodland is certainly worth taking a peek.
Jordan Spieth +5500
His incredible slide continues and Spieth is out of the OWGR top-50 for the first time since 2013. He made the cut last week but his T55 didn’t get him any rankings points. Can he fall any further? It’s hard to imagine him coming all the way back and getting a victory in Phoenix making him a risky pick. But he’s the type of golfer that can succeed on a cookie-cutter layout. And if he gets a little confidence in his game he could be dangerous. And he comes with a hefty payout at his current odds.
Matt Kuchar +3318
After missing the cut in his title defense at the Sony Open, Kuchar spent a week in Asia capturing the Singapore Open by three shots over Justin Rose. Brimming with confidence, Kooch heads to the desert where he’s been a solid play going 7 for 7 with progressively better results over his last three starts with T4-T5-T9. It’s possible he’s in line for a better finish this week.
Bubba Watson +3015
Watson makes his 14th straight start at this event and all that’s missing is a title. He is 11 for 13 since first qualifying in 2007 and has a pair of runner-up showings along with an additional three top-10s. He averages 314 yards per drive and this layout is perfect for his form. And speaking of form, Watson is coming off a T6 at the FIO, his best showing in the early part of the season. He’s definitely worth a look at his price.
Course: TPC Scottsdale – 7,261 yards, Par 71
The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has hosted the event since 1987 and it is one of the most popular stops on Tour. The course plays just under 7,300 yards and given some altitude in the desert it typically scores well. We’ve seen winning numbers consistently between 14- and 18-under with a few outliers. Phil Mickelson carded a course record 28-under in 2013. The conditions are ripe for heavy hitters and we’ll see plenty of drivers this week, allowing players to attack the greens with little resistance. Early tee times are at a disadvantage given the moisture on the course. When the track dries out players can attack the fairways getting lengthy rolls. The par-3 16th is the signature hole on the layout, surrounded by stands and a raucous gallery. Up to that point the course is rather bland.
