With most of golf’s star players headed to China for the WGC-HSBC Champions event, there are many up and comers staying in the states to compete in the alternate Sanderson Farms Championship, taking place on the 7,421-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson course in Jackson, Miss. The field has plenty of golfers capable of winning with the opening odds suggesting as much. Korean Sungjae Im opened as the slight favorite at +2035 with last year’s winner Ryan Armour coming in at +2315. As an alternate event, the incentives are less than a regular PGA Tour competition, but you can’t take the victory away.

Need to Know
Rain is in the forecast for the early rounds and that could impact the scores. We’ve witnessed the winner tap out at between -16 and -20 over the last five events, a clear indication that the layout is easy enough to navigate, and whoever handles the conditions could get a jump heading into the weekend. There is no specific winning formula here. Wide fairways play to distance off the tee and accuracy isn’t an absolute necessity. The smaller sized greens put an emphasis on the short game and putting is always a factor. Five of the past seven titleists made the Sanderson Farms Championship their first PGA Tour victory and overall 11 players won for the first time in Mississippi.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Aaron Baddeley -110 vs. Ryan Armour
After a poor finish to last season, Baddeley started the new campaign off right with a solid showing at the Safeway Open. He carded a second-round 67 and hit a pair of 69s over the weekend to finish T4 just one swing behind the tri-leaders. Badds had just one top-10 in 27 starts last season, so he has to be feeling good about his game. He had a good start here last year with a 7-under after 36 holes. The defending champ has flashed inconsistency and a final-round 73 at the CJ Cup hurt his chances. Plus, he’s making the long trip after just playing in Korea and that has to have an effect.
Lucas Glover -115 vs. Patrick Rodgers
Glover is having a bit of a renaissance in his career. Fresh off retaining his Tour card through the Web.com Tour Finals, the former U.S. Open champion teed it up for the first time in several months at the Safeway Open grabbing a share of 17th place with an 8-under total. It wasn’t great, especially the finish when he carded a 72 on Sunday, but he’s back in the saddle and his experience in a weak field should help.
Sungjae Im -120 vs. Aaron Baddeley
Im is a tournament winner looking for a place to happen. And since this stop has crowned a number of first-timers, this could be it. He is the favorite after all in a rather weak field and he opened the season with a strong T4 at the Safeway Open. Going against tougher competition at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges, Im slipped to a share of 41st. He may have been affected by a case of nerves playing on his home course with an opening-round 73. However, he finished strong with a 69 and the field is more to his liking in Jackson.
Chris Kirk -120 vs. Cameron Davis +100
Kirk is one player who has had success at this event, winning the title at what was known as the Viking Classic in 2011 at Annandale and taking runner-up honors in 2016. That comfort level should help his game, which has been mediocre at best, and Captain could rekindle the success he enjoyed not long ago. And he’s looking to bounce back from missing the cut at the Safeway Open.
