Wrapping up the fall season, the PGA Tour heads to St. Simons Island, Georgia, for The RSM Classic, contested at the Sea Island Golf Club. The unique two-course format has been in existence since 2015 with the field of up to 156 golfers playing the first two rounds on the Seaside and newly renovated Plantation courses. Those surviving the cut will play the weekend on the more familiar Seaside layout. Opening odds at online sportsbooks suggest a wide-open event with Webb Simpson topping the chart. Defending champion Charles Howell III is also among the top favorites, and there are a number of intriguing tournament matchups to pick from. Need to Know
The biggest item is the two course format. Each player gets 18 holes on what is considered the easier 7,058-yard, par-72 Plantation course over the first two days with a chance to make up ground or create some separation. This course was redone last year to make it more challenging and this is the first time this event will attack the new layout. Those making the cut will play 54 holes on the coastal Seaside layout, which measures 7,005 yards and plays at par 70. It’s a short track with few hazards so hitting fairways and greens are more important than distance. The past four winners have all scored -17 or better, so the layout isn’t the most difficult. It was a good week at the Mayakoba on my matchups with three winners, including a pair of plus-odds upsets. Now I have to continue on my heater.
The RSM Classic Matchup Picks
Brian Gay +100 vs. Zach Johnson
Gay checks all the boxes for a matchup winner. His recent form is solid and he’s had success at the Seaside layout, so I’m backing him against Johnson. He’s a perfect 6 for 6 this season with a T7 at the Shriners and a T3 at the Bermuda Championship among his four top-25s, and he’s coming off a T14 at Mayakoba where he recorded an ace. Gay also has two top-5s and a T23 at Sea Island with strong stats that fit the layout.
Scottie Scheffler -110 vs. Russell Knox
If familiarity with the course is something you look at than stay away from Scheffler since he’s making his debut. However, it’s hard to ignore what he’s done this season and Seaside isn’t going to scare him. Like Gay, Scheffler is perfect with four top-20s, including a T7 at Greenbrier and T3 at the Bermuda Championship. He’s coming off a T18 at Mayakoba and has shot 70 or lower in eight consecutive rounds.
Adam Long -115 vs. Harry Higgs
Sticking to the recent form thing Long is another player who is perfect this season and he really made an impact in his last start. While he played the weekend his first five starts his best finish was T14 at Greenbrier. Last week at the Mayakoba Classic Long opened with a 63 and finished one-shot off the lead at 19-under. His numbers are trending up which is why I like him in this matchup.
Chris Kirk -110 vs. Brian Stuard
This might qualify as a risky pick since Kirk just returned after a lengthy layoff and Stuard has played in six events this season. But the Captain is back at a good time. He finished T33 last week after nearly six-months off scoring 71 or lower in each round. Now he gets the Seaside course, which he admitted playing at least 300 rounds. That’s enough to convince me.
Harris English -110 vs. Kevin Kisner
A guy on a run of hot form versus someone who plays consistently well at Seaside, who do you pick? English placed among the top-6 in each of his last four starts with a T4 in Houston and solo fifth at Mayakoba. Kisner has four top-10s in his last five starts at Seaside. English has played this course before and I’m going to use that experience and recent form as the deciding factor for picking him in this matchup.
