The PGA Tour heads further south this week for the second World Golf Championship of the season. Many of the top golfers in the world will convene just outside Mexico City for the WGC-Mexico Championship at the Club de Golf Chapultepec. This is the fourth year the event is held south of the border with Dustin Johnson emerging victorious in two of the previous three, including a five-swing triumph over current OWGR No. 1 Rory McIlroy 12 months ago. A limited field of 72 golfers with no cuts means tournament matchups will be played to their entirety, and there are a number of options available at online sportsbooks featuring eight of the top-10 ranked players in the world. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
There aren’t many Tour stops where the course is situated more than 7,800 feet above sea level, so the field will have to get accustomed to the elevation quickly. The good news for players is that there is no cut giving everyone ample time to adjust. Stretched out to 7,345 yards, Club de Golf Chapultepec will play much shorter, negating any advantage big hitters might have and requiring players to handle their approach shots better. Outside of the elevation there are similarities to Riviera with blind tee shots, tree-lined fairways and undulating greens giving those who played last week an advantage. I hit on two of five matchups last week with my longshot pick Bubba Watson missing the cut. It was the first sub-.500 week in a few but I’ll do my best to make up for it this time around.
WGC Mexico Championship Matchup Picks
Dustin Johnson +105 vs. Jon Rahm
The way Johnson has mastered the Chapultepec layout he’s hard to pass up at plus-odds. DJ has won 66.7 percent of the time here and he absolutely loves the course. Okay, there’ve only been three tournaments, but winning two of them and finishing five shots clear of second last year can’t be overlooked. DJ steps up his game at the WGCs with six wins and exactly half of his career rounds here are 66 or lower.
Bernd Wiesberger +120 vs. Corey Conners
Wiesberger bounced back in a big way last season with three wins on the Euro Tour while almost winning the Race to Dubai. He’s taken a few weeks off after a pair of MCs, and he hasn’t fared well on his PGA stops, but this layout has a Euro feel to it and he tamed it with a closing 66 two years ago. Refreshed and comfortable, I expect big things from Wiesberger this week.
Sergio Garcia +100 vs. Gary Woodland
When he’s not destroying greens and bunkers with his sticks, Garcia tends to go unnoticed. But overlooking his recent form would be a huge mistake this week. He’s got this trend of finishing in the top-10 in every other tournament going on and he comes in after a T37 at Riviera. So you know what that means. His finish has gotten better each year here with all three inside the top-12, and he’s never shot a round over par. “It’s the kind of golf course I like,” the Spaniard said. And I’ll take him at his word.
Xander Schauffele -115 vs. Webb Simpson
Schauffele is another player who shines at the WGCs. Defending his title at the WGC-HSBC Champions earlier this season, the X-man lost in a playoff to Rory McIlroy. Six times in his 10 career WGC starts he placed among the top-20 and just missed on two other occasions. He’s been solid at Chapultepec with a T18 and T14 in two starts with one bad score each time preventing him from a better finish.
Abraham Ancer -145 vs. Brandt Snedeker
It’s not really a home game for Ancer, but he’s closer than most owning dual U.S.-Mexican citizenship. He enters as the top-ranked Mexican player in the field at No. 29 in the OWGR, and his game has come a long way since a T39 at Chapultepec last year. He recently grabbed a T6 at the European Tour’s Saudi International followed by a solo second at The American Express. He knows the layout better than most giving him an edge in this matchup.
