PGA Tour Odds - Sony Open in Hawaii Matchups

The PGA Tour stays in Hawai’i and expands the field for the Sony Open in Hawai’i, which gets underway on Thursday, January 10 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. For the first time in a few months we’ll have a full field of 144 golfers with 22 making the trip to Oahu from Maui after competing in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions. A larger field means more betting opportunities and BookMaker.eu has plenty, including a complete list of matchup odds. What we won’t have is a back-to-back champion as TOC titleist Xander Schauffele sits this one out. Justin Thomas, who took third last week, opened as the betting favorite at +575. He’s joined at the top of the odds board by Bryson DeChambeau ( +982 ), Jordan Spieth ( +1439 ), Gary Woodland ( +1439 ) and Marc Leishman ( +1871 ).

Need to Know

For those who played last week, the Waialae layout is much different than at Kapalua. At just over 7,000 yards, the course is short by Tour standards and will require players to club down at the tee box. By contrast, the Plantation Course played at over 7,500 yards and the shorter yardage puts an emphasis on placement rather than distance. However, it is an advantage to have played at the TOC the week before with 14 of the previous 20 Sony Open champions having competed the week prior. Water comes into play on a few holes, but for the most part it’s a manageable course for professionals. Justin Thomas carded a record 27-under two years ago and only light winds are expected, setting the field up for plenty of birdies and eagles.

Sony Open in Hawai’i Matchup Picks

Gary Woodland +100 vs. Bryson DeChambeau

Woodland is playing solid golf heading to Waialae and just finished as runner-up at last week’s TOC. He held a 3-shot advantage heading into the final round and shot a bogy-free 68. However, Schauffele’s record 62 on Sunday was enough to pull off the epic comeback. Woodland was the only golfer to score all four rounds in the 60s and he did everything he had to in order to get the victory. It’s heartbreaking to lose that way, but Woodland can take solace in knowing his game was on. And he’s been good at Waialae never missing a cut in 17 starts. He outlasted DeChambeau last week finishing eight strokes better.

Cameron Smith +130 vs. Patrick Reed

I really like the Aussies game and he’s coming off his second straight victory at his homeland’s PGA Championship last month. There is some downside to Smith, however, and that’s because he hasn’t fared as well away from home. He has two straight Australian PGA Championship wins and placed among the top-15 in 10 of 11 starts. But his last event outside Australia was a T54 at the WGC-HSBC Champions. Reed played last week, but he was 70 or higher each time and hasn’t been below that number in his last five rounds.

Charles Howell III -150 vs, Kevin Kisner

He’s listed eighth on the odds board to win the title, but I have Howell pegged for a better finish and possibly taking the whole enchilada. He knows the layout better than anyone and he’s had plenty of success here. He’s played the Sony Open 17 times with nine top-10 finishes and he’s never missed the cut. Course knowledge means something and Howell has plenty of it. Plus, he’s a more relaxed golfer after winning the RSM Classic in November. The odds are steep, but it’s better to win something than to lose everything.
