PGA Tour Picks – ATT Pebble Beach Pro-Am Matchup Odds

PGA Tour Picks

It’s off to the coast of California this week for the PGA Tour with a stop at one of the most breathtaking venues in all of golf when the pros and celebrity amateurs tee it up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, hosted by the Pebble Beach Golf Links. The pro-am format increases the number of players and requires the field to compete over three different courses with a cut after the third round and Sunday’s final on the iconic layout. The event has surprised us in the past with last year a prime example when Ted Potter Jr. outlasted Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Jason Day for the victory. All four are back with DJ and Day the top two favorites on the odds board at BookMaker.eu. Matchup odds for the tournament are listed below.

Need to Know

Along with Pebble Beach the field will also have to contend with the Monterey Peninsula Course and Spyglass Hill. All three are short with none playing over 7,000 yards, and weather will be a factor with the area deluged last weekend and more precipitation in the forecast. The slower track could actually help the field, especially at Pebble Beach where the greens are on the small side with several tricky placements. Distance off the tee is not a factor, which brings the field closer together. However, the courses seem to fit certain players. The Monterey layout is regarded as the easiest of the three and produces more eagles, allowing players to make up ground on the scorecard. With the cut after 54 holes, players can absorb a poor round and still be in contention to play on Sunday, and that’s all you can ask for.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Matchup Picks

Phil Mickelson +105 vs. Matt Kuchar

It might seem like a stretch to go with Mickelson after he missed the cut last week in Phoenix at one of his favorite events. And Kuchar has been lights out with last week’s T4 included in a stretch where he won twice in five starts. This is a good rebound spot for Lefty, who surprised all of us a few weeks ago with a runner-up showing at the Desert Classic. Last week’s result was even more of a surprise. Phil is a four-time winner at Pebble Beach, the last coming seven years ago. He has two runner-up showings in his last three starts here and he’s familiar and comfortable with the format. He’s also comfortable with the poa annua greens on all three courses, which should benefit that part of his game.

Jordan Spieth -110 vs. Paul Casey -110

We keep waiting for Spieth to snap out of his funk, saying ‘this is the week’ whenever he starts. Yet he continues to disappoint his backers. However, this is the week. Spieth has played well here in the past with a win two years ago and two other finishes of T7 or better while going 6 for 6. Most players have trouble making short putts here so Spieth won’t fall behind the field in that area. He’s had some great moments in tough conditions and they are sure to be demanding this week. Casey had a nice start to the season with four finishes between 13th and 18th prior to missing the cut at the Sony Open. It’s hard to judge him since he hasn’t started in a month and he wasn’t anything special before that.

Branden Grace +100 vs. Adam Scott -120

This is a matchup with as many positives as negatives for each player, making it one of the more intriguing on the board. Grace is coming off a runner-up finish in Phoenix where he took advantage of Fowler’s poor final round to briefly jump in front. However, he gave it back with a bogey on 17 and that could be difficult to overcome. Scott was deadly on the approach leading to a solo second at Torrey Pines a few weeks back. However, his two starts here have resulted in a T52 and MC, so that’s unnerving. At least he’s back to give it another shot while feeling good about his game. But I like Grace to continue his run and put the misery of last week behind him.
