For those who didn’t get invited to the WGC, the PGA Tour is holding an alternate event again this week with the Barracuda Championship taking place in Reno, Nev. We’re likely to see a field similar to what we had last week at the Barbasol Championship; a number of youngsters looking to make their mark along with veteran players all chasing valuable FedEx Cup points. The field lacks big names, but the tournament at Montreux Golf and Country Club won’t be short of matchup wagering options. Check out the latest matchup odds at top golf sportsbooks.

Need to Know
It wasn’t a good week for my matchup picks at the Barbasol, but we tend to see strange things when the field sets up the way it did. And we have a similar situation this week with another alternate event. The biggest difference is in player scoring where the Modified Stableford system is in effect. Points are credited based on how players perform at each hole. Birdies and Eagles are rewarded more than bogeys and worse, creating a fun and interesting style of play with more aggressive shots than we’d see in a stroke-play event. Elevation will be a factor with Montreux Golf and Country Club nearly a mile above sea-level. That will shrink the 7,472 yard layout and help level the playing field.
Barracuda Championship Matchup Picks
Andrea Pavan -105 vs. Roger Sloan
Looking to iron out some kinks in his game, Pavan crossed the Atlantic with the Euro circuit on hiatus. He’s also looking to put last week’s MC at The Open behind him. He’s been hit-or-miss recently with a win at the BMW International, a T4, and three MCs in his last five starts. This week’s field is nothing special and the good Pavan should dominate this matchup, as long as he shows up.
Martin Laird -120 vs. Ryan Palmer
It’s hard to go against Laird winning the tournament, so I’ll certainly back him in this matchup. He’s a Colorado State product who’s performed well at elevation, and he’s been money in this event. His T15 last year was his worst finish in five tries and he enters off a T6 at the Barbasol Championship where he carded a final round 63. It’s hard to wager against that kind of success.
Sepp Straka +120 vs. Russell Henley
I’m leaning toward Straka as the only underdog on my matchup picks and it’s a risky go. He’s only made 50 percent of the cuts this season, but he enters playing his best golf. He finished the Barbasol Championship last week going 63-66 for a career-best solo third. That came after a T26 at the John Deere Classic and a previous best T11 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Advancing to the weekend in three of his last four starts is a big deal for Straka, who looks to continue his stellar play.
Bill Haas -110 vs. Cameron Tringale
Is the third time the charm or is it three strikes and you’re out? Haas is hoping the former after putting himself in contention the last two weeks only to falter on the final day. A final 71 at the John Deere Classic dropped him into a share of 10th and a Sunday 73 at Keen Trace dropped him to T11. Those are two of Haas’ best three finishes this season, so despite the Sunday jitters, he enters in fine form and should dispatch his matchup partner.
Sam Saunders -115 vs. Josh Teater
Known more for his famous grandfather than his golf game, Saunders ventured to Colorado to refine his craft away from Arnold Palmer. While it hasn’t been an overwhelming success, Saunders has been able to make a living playing a game, so I guess there is something to be said about it. His days in Colorado got him accustomed to playing at altitude leading to three straight top-10s in this event. He’s also coming off a T10 at the John Deere Classic giving him a good feeling heading into this tournament.
