So much for the offseason. The 2019-20 PGA Tour season has a different look with A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier making its debut as the season opener. Typically played in July, the move will likely create a different atmosphere at The Old White TPC layout in Sulphur Springs, W.V. However, the object of the game remains the same, and the 156-player field is faced with a new cut-line rule this season, which is now the top 65 and no ties. Bryson DeChambeau is the highest ranked player from last season’s FedExCup standings and he opened as the betting favorite at online sportsbooks. Defending champ Kevin Na is further down the odds board. Visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of betting odds.

Odds Analysis
Bubba Watson +2500
A Greenbrier local, Watson has extensive knowledge of the course and how it plays in just about every possible condition, so he’s got that going for him. But will he be all in when the bell rings? He’s done enough here in the past going 5 for 5 with three top-20s, however a top-10 showing has been elusive. Watson is probably a better pick in the matchups with a host of players looking at this event as a chance to make strides in their game. For Watson it’s more of a vacation.
Bryson DeChambeau +1200
It’s easy to go with the favorite in a tournament like this simply because DeChambeau is the biggest name and highest ranked player from last season. He can also be bought at a decent opening price of +1200. He was T14 here in 2017 and returns for the first time since. We’ve seen him struggle with altitude at previous events and this will be a challenge. But knowing DeChambeau, he’s going to account for everything the track has to offer. This is also an opportunity for him to get a head start on the field in the FedExCup race.
Harold Varner III +5000
This is an event that’s suited for Varner and I’ll buy him at his current odds. We last saw HV3 in the FedExCup playoffs where he shot a blistering 14-under at The Northern Trust for a T3. He blew his wad in that event, though, and was a non-factor at the BMW Championship. A few weeks off and a less stressful environment should help in his quest for a first Tour victory. Varner played stellar golf during the fall portion of last season and he grabbed a top-5 here in 2018. The layout rewarded his approach game last time and will do so again.
Viktor Hovland +1400
The future of the Tour is in good hands with the likes of Hovland ready to compete for a full season. He’s going to attract a lot of attention and how he handles it will tell us a lot about him. Hovland finished up the PGA Tour season with four straight top-20s, including a solo fourth at the Wyndham Championship. He earned his Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour finals going T11-T2. He’s near the top of the odds board for this one, but I like his chances.
Sungjae Im +2500
Now that he’s had a few weeks off to rest, Im should be a serious contender in this tournament. He led the Tour with 35 starts last season and was the only rookie to compete in the Tour Championship. The kid has stamina as he’s scheduled to make the first of six starts in the next eight weeks. He accumulated enough points playing so much, but he also had results with 16 top-25s, including seven among the top-10.
Course: The Old White TPC – 7,286 yards, Par 70
The Old White is the only course the tournament has ever known, serving as host venue since the inaugural playing in 2010. With a distance of nearly 7,300 yards the layout looks long, but the elevation evens things out. By no means is this a difficult course and it has been described as a classical layout. There are penalties for missing the fairways so we’re likely to see a majority of the field club down. Accuracy over distance off the tee is going to keep players in the game. The track provides plenty of scoring opportunities and is best suited for an all-around game.
