PGA Tour Picks – Odds to Win Puerto Rico Open

Odds to Win Puerto Rico Open

Held in conjunction with the WGC Mexico Championship, the Puerto Rico Open didn’t attract the big names, but there are FedEx Cup points and a nice purse to go along with a PGA Tour title at stake. The event was cancelled last year with the assistance of Hurricane Maria, but the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club is set to resume hosting the tournament for some of the lesser known talents on Tour.

Former Major champion Retief Goosen grabbed a runner-up finish here two years ago and opened with odds of +4050. Daniel Berger is the betting favorite with odds +1250 at BookMaker.eu with Graeme McDowell ( +1550 ) and Peter Uihlein ( +1625 ) next in line among the top three.

Odds Analysis

Daniel Berger +1250

Recent form has been a non-factor in deciding a winner at this event, and that’s a good thing for Berger. Two years ago D.A. Points had a best finish of 39th with three missed cuts in his previous six starts before winning the PRO, and none of the three titleists before that were setting the links on fire. Berger is a native Floridian so the track should be to his liking. He hasn’t fared well lately, but his recovery from a wrist injury is going well and he should at least be hanging around the top of the leaderboard in a watered-down field.

Adam Svensson +5575

Some of Svensson’s best golf has been played on coastal courses, and this is as coastal as it gets. He grabbed the first round lead at the Sony Open in Hawai’i and played a solid game at Torrey Pines where he was just outside the top-10 after 54 holes. He needs to find some consistency to finish off a four-round event, but his ability to play the wind and elements can’t be overlooked. He also has plenty of value at his current odds and he is a sleeper in weak field.

Scott Brown +2050

In a weakened field it’s always a profitable play to look further down the odds board for a winner. None of the past champs were among the favorites and recent form hasn’t meant much. Brown is near the top at +2050, but as the numbers suggest, the field is wide open. Brown has been the most consistent player on this track with five top-20s in six appearances with a title back in 2013. He hasn’t played much recently, but his affection for the course is evident and he should perform.

Sam Horsfield +3350

Another player based out of Florida with a familiarity to coastal golf and grainy greens, Horsfield has performed well on the Euro Tour, though top finishes have been tough to come by. Again, recent form isn’t a big deal here and Horsfield is looking to gain traction on the PGA Tour. This is an event and a field that will allow him to do that. His adjusted numbers are in line or better than an average PGA Tour score, but he’s fallen short under the bright lights with a just a 2 for 6 showing in 2017. With a field more in line with a Euro Tour, this could be Sammy’s time to shine.

Course: Coco Beach Golf and Country Club – 7,500 yards, Par 72

In terms of yardage the layout is definitely on the long side, but it is a bit misleading. Every par 4 measures under 460 yards and two of the four par 5s are less than 550 yards. Those are scoreable holes for the pros, even the ones lower down the totem pole. First thought would be to tee it up and bring out the big dogs, but a number of obstacles stand in the way. There are a number of water hazards and even more bunkers lining the track giving the field a chance to club down to avoid serious trouble. The forecast is calling for favorable conditions, which means the scores can plummet. However, situated along the coast, wind always seems to be a factor.
