PGA Tour Picks – Odds to Win Rocket Mortgage Classic

Odds to Win Rocket Mortgage Classic

It’s been a decade since the PGA Tour last stopped in Michigan. That drought ends this week with the inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic taking place at the Detroit Golf Club. The past two winners on Tour are in attendance and both are at the top of the odds board at online sportsbooks. Gary Woodland plays his first event as a major champion and Chez Reavie is coming off his four-shot win at the Travelers Championship. We keep seeing Dustin Johnson as a favorite in events he plays, and there he is again at the top of the odds board. BookMaker.eu has a complete list of odds for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Odds Analysis

Rickie Fowler +1100

I’m going to stay away from the favorites this week. Dustin Johnson may be the best player in the field, but his recent putting woes are not going to get fixed on this course. He hasn’t lost strokes putting in three consecutive stops since 2017, but there are better value picks. Fowler has sponsorship obligations to fulfill and that typically means a casual weekend of schmoozing. I’m going to fade the top two and look for a better payday.

Sungjae Im +4500

A rising star on Tour, Im has proven more than capable of playing with the big boys. With six top-10 finishes this season, including a T3 at the Arnold Palmer Invite and more recently a solo seventh in Canada and T21 at last week’s Travelers Championship. The form is solid and the confidence level high for the South Korean. And his payout for a victory is handsome.

Hideki Matsuyama +1400

He hasn’t won in two years, but Matsuyama has come close this season and it looks like it’s just a matter of time. The DGC is new to just about everyone, but Matsuyama has performed well in similar course layouts and designs. He arrives with four straight top 25 finishes and 10 overall this season. His tee to green game is strong and he can putt, setting him up well for a strong tournament.

Kevin Streelman +4000

Another player entering with solid form and stats that correlate to this course is Streelman. His last seven rounds have all been below 70, earning him a T15 at the Travelers and solo fourth at the Memorial. He ranks among the top-40 on Tour in fairways hit, GIR and strokes gained tee to green. He hasn’t won since 2014 so you could say he’s due.

Joaquin Niemann +4500

A career-best tying T5 at last week’s Travelers Championship capped a run of solid form for Niemann, who looks to keep the good times rolling. He’s finished T31 or better in four straight events, which is life altering for the Chilean. Prior to that stretch he finished outside the top-35 in 13 straight starts. The putter has been working lately and Niemann enters with a lot of confidence.

Course: Detroit Golf Club – 7,334 yards, Par 72

Playing host to the maiden Rocket Mortgage Classic is the Donald Ross designed Detroit Golf Club. The property consists of two courses with 17 holes of the North Course being played along with one from the South Course. That allows organizers to get additional length with the track stretched to 7,340 yards at par 72. The track has a good balance of short and long holes to test a players skill. However, it is a straightforward layout and the distance is about average for Tour standards. There are obstacles that the field will have to get over. Bunkers surround nearly every green and the rough is thick. And if that’s not enough, the greens have major slopes which could be damaging if the flat stick isn’t working.
