No longer an alternate event on the PGA Tour, the Sanderson Farms Championship stands alone on the schedule. Sadly, the field will be diminished with some bigger names chasing riches across the pond. Another thinned out field opens up the betting options, however, and young Chilean Joaquin Niemann goes for a second straight win as the betting favorite at top online sportsbooks. Odds Analysis
Joaquin Niemann +1200
The emotional high of winning his first PGA Tour event might be tough to overcome, but don’t discount Niemann. With rounds of 68 and lower, including a 62 in the second, Niemann ran away for a 6-shot win at The Greenbrier finishing at 21-under. It’s another field to his liking and Niemann is in a good spot for the back-to-back with inviting odds for a favorite. However, there are a bunch of young and hungry players looking to grab their piece of the pie and going further down the odds board will pay off.
Sungjae Im +1400
A few weeks off at the conclusion of last season was all Im needed. Now he’s back to tame a course he struggled on last year. Im missed the cut here, which was surprising considering his consistent play all season, and that should be enough motivation to keep him near the top of the leaderboard. He was solid on the greens last week leading to a top-20 at The Greenbrier, and we’ve seen a number of fist time winners at this event over the years. It’s time for Im to take the podium.
Corey Conners +2800
Conners burst onto the scene last year at this very event with a runner-up finish that included three rounds of 68 and lower. The results were mixed the rest of the year with a bunch of MCs and victory at the Valero Texas Open. He finished last season on a heater going T21-T7-T26 in the three FedExCup Playoff events and he ranked No. 1 in GIR percentage, which is a stat that should serve him well at Jackson. Conners has plenty of value at his current price.
Cameron Champ +4500
Can you dip in the Champ pool again this year? In just his second Tour start Champ shot -21 to win here last year by four swings. The fall portion of his 2019 season was easily the strongest with over 81 percent of his FedExCup points earned in the five fall events he played. His three top-10 finishes all came during the fall. There were some struggles the rest of the season, but returning to a venue and time of year he obviously enjoys should make Champ a worthwhile pick.
Lucas Glover +2200
With a fondness for the South, Glover should be on everyone’s radar this week. We last saw him bringing up the rear at the Tour Championship, which likely drove some bettors away. But keep in mind his T7 at the BMW Championship and two other top-10s down the stretch of last season. Also, he’s 5 for 5 here with a T5, T14 and T22 since 2014.
Course: Country Club of Jackson – 7,421 yards, Par 72
Jackson, Mississippi’s Country Club course plays host for the sixth year in a row, like’s it done since the event moved to the fall in 2014. Unlike previous years, the event stands alone on the PGA Tour schedule and offers full FedExCup points for the first time with 500 going to the winner. The course has a classical design featuring tree-lined fairways that are sometimes difficult to find. However, they are not penal by nature with the field averaging a high number of greens in regulation. There are the typical hazards with two-thirds of the greens guarded by bunkers and water a factor on six holes. Overall, the course is scoreable as we saw last year when Champ shot 21-under for his first Tour victory.
