PGA Tour Picks - Odds To Win Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Coming off a three-week swing through Asia, the PGA Tour is back in the states exclusively for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. The field of players gets stronger this week as Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler are set to make their season debuts and both are among the betting favorites on the early lines at BookMaker.eu. Fowler and Tony Finau, who lost the WGC-HSBC Champions last week in a playoff, came off at +1100. Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau are next on the odds board at +1200.

Also appearing for the first time this season is Webb Simpson. Winner at The Players Championship in May, Simpson came off as a +1400 betting favorite, slightly ahead of defending champion Patrick Cantlay, who opened at +1600. First-round action gets underway on Thursday, November 1.

Odds Analysis

Tony Finau +1100

If he gets over the gut-wrenching loss in China last week, Finau should be in the running this time around. He had a 3-shot lead heading into the final round, only to lose in a playoff to Xander Schauffele, through no fault of his own. He opened with a 66 and 67, only to fall off the pace a bit with a 70 and 71 over the final two days. He has plenty of experience in Vegas and should command the course. The only issue is jet lag and, of course, bouncing back from that deflating loss.

Patrick Cantlay +1600

Won here last year by bookending a pair of 67s around a 71 and 70, and defeated two other players and the wind for his first PGA Tour victory. He put together a solid last season with six top-10s and opened the new campaign with a T17 at the Safeway Open and a T7 in China last week. His game has become more consistent and he’s a likely candidate to be in the hunt again this year.

Cameron Champ +3300

Champ ran away from the field last week, winning his first title at the Sanderson Farms Championship by four swings with a 21-under. His accuracy and distance off the tee will set him up for a low score, but the rest of his game still needs some refining. While he has the tools for all kinds of success on the Tour, it’s too early to crown him, especially with a much tougher and deeper field.

Jordan Spieth +1200

He’s making his tournament debut, but some question his motivation for being here. He’s coming off his worst season as a pro and has dropped in the rankings to No. 13. He last competed at the BMW Championship where he tied for 55th. He’s the class of the field and could have a big weekend, if that’s what he wants.

Chesson Hadley +4000

Sometimes you have to go with a gut pick, and this is it. Hadley likes this event and enjoys desert golf, so he has that going for him. One bad round cost him last year when he failed to overcome an opening 74 and finished a shot behind the tri-leaders. He tore it up at the CIMB Classic with a pair of 66s to close the tourney T2. But a missed cut at the Safeway Open and a T73 at the CJ Cup keep us wondering.

Course: TPC Summerlin - 7,255-yards, Par-71

The course is pretty straight forward with few hazards. The fairways are firm, which allows short hitters to make up distance quickly off the tee. Top scores should sit in the -18 to -20 range unless the wind picks up, and that happened here last year with the fierce gusts knocking the winning score to -9. Without the wind we should see plenty of birdies and eagles on a course that plays easy for the pros.
