The new schedule setup on the PGA Tour appears to be working with the fall events getting a talent boost. That’s the case this week with a number of big names set to tee it up in Las Vegas at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Brooks Koepka will dust off the sticks for his season debut and he’s the betting favorite at top offshore sportsbooks in a field that also includes defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau and Webb Simpson, and a handful of young studs. Odds Analysis
Chez Reavie +4500
Keeping the ball in line is a key to victory and nobody did that better than Reavie last season. He finished eighth in the FedEx Cup standings with the help of six top-10s, which included a victory at the Travelers Championship. And he ranked first on Tour in driving accuracy last season. He’s not a big hitter, but the elevation and layout negates the use of drivers off the tee. Hit em straight and knock the approach onto the green for a low score and a nice payday.
Tony Finau +2200
I wonder how the flight and sojourn on the European Tour are going to affect Finau. He is returning from Scotland after a T10 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, so the game appears to be in good shape. He’s also familiar with the area and the course going 5 for 5 with a T7 and two T16s. It’s always tempting to look further down the odds board in fall events and we’re still waiting for Finau to hit it big. This could be the week.
Patrick Cantlay +1200
Summerlin fits Cantlay’s game and it’s shown the last two years. He won the title in 2017 dealing with nasty conditions, and finished second last year in his title defense even though he was 11-shots better. A bogey on 17 and a strong finish by Bryson DeChambeau cost Cantlay the repeat. Forgiving fairways play right into Cantlay’s style and he’s shown the ability to adapt to changing desert conditions.
Webb Simpson +2000
I had to jump on Simpson when I saw the odds emerge. He’s a beast at TPC Summerlin with a win in 2013, a pair of T4s and two other top-20s along with a scoring average of 68 in his eight starts. He starts for the first time this season, but he’s coming off a strong season that saw three runner-up showings along with four other top-25s in his last eight Tour events.
Gary Woodland +2800
Can Woodland find the form that landed him in the winner’s circle at the U.S. Open? His game regressed after that breakthrough major victory and he’s hoping the forgiving layout at Summerlin can help him find it. It’s been a month since he’s pegged it up so he is well-rested. And he’s had some success here with a T10 last year and a T18 in 2017. The post major struggles have Woodland available at a good price.
Course: TPC Summerlin – 7,255 yards, Par 71
There isn’t much in terms of difficulty on this layout. TPC Summerlin is a straight forward track with wide fairways and few hazards. The only defense is the weather and when the desert winds start howling they can play havoc with a golf ball. In tame conditions the pros can ace this course and they have. Three different winners in the past six years scored -20 or better. There is some altitude with the course about 2,000 feet above sea level, which shortens the course and also levels the playing field. We are likely to see more irons with an emphasis put on placement over power. Still, that won’t stop the big hitters from exploding off the tee. TPC Summerlin has been associated with this event since 1992 and took over as solo host in 2008.
