The Sanderson Farms Championship no longer has to contend with another PGA Tour event taking place at the same time, getting a boost to stand-alone status this year. Instead, it goes against one of the bigger European Tour events of the season, greatly impacting the talent of the field. That doesn’t mean we won’t have quality golf at the Country Club of Jackson this week. We will have a variety of betting options with a tightly-grouped field and there are a plethora of matchup odds available at offshore sportsbooks. Fresh off his first Tour victory, Joaquin Niemann is the betting favorite, however the field is wide open and coin can be won on the tournament matchups. Need to Know
A move to the fall in 2014 also brought a change in venue with the Country Club of Jackson hosting the last six years. No longer an alternate-field event on the Tour schedule, the SFC attracted a stronger field this year, though most of the bigger names are chasing riches across the pond this week. With its new status comes 500 FedExCup points to the winner along with hoisting the hardware. I hit two of three matchup picks at The Greenbrier with a pair of ties. Of course I faded Niemann, who won his maiden Tour event. Overall it’s not a bad start to the new season. The field gets a resort course this week with Jackson, Mississippi’s Country Club playing 7,421 yards at par 72. Tree-lined fairways, greenside bunkers on a number of holes and water around six others are merely obstacles and not hazardous.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Roberto Castro +115 vs. Wyndham Clark
Looking for plus-odds players in matchups is a great way to add to the pocketbook, and Castro’s record at Jackson has to be considered. How about a course record 62 at this event a few years ago and two top-5s in his three starts? He faded at The Greenbrier last week, but was top-5 after 36 holes on a course not to his liking. Recent form is solid, too, advancing to the weekend in each of his last six starts. He’s torn up Bermuda greens in the past and this is his layout. I’ll take Castro at this price to win the matchup.
Brian Harman -115 vs. J.T. Poston
Harman has been on a heater lately and it’s time to take notice. His T3 at Greenbrier was his fourth top-10 in his last eight starts and it looks like he’s turned his game around after a sluggish first part of last season.
Lucas Glover -125 vs. Scottie Scheffler
Minus the last-place showing at the Tour Championship, Glover finished last season strong. He was T7 at the BMW Championship and had two additional top-10s. His love of the South is evident and he’s been good in this event going 5 for 5 with a T5, T14 and T22 in his last three SFC starts.
Brandt Snedeker +110 vs. Joaquin Niemann
I’ve been fooled before thinking a recent victory hangover would be too difficult to overcome. I’m going to play that card once again and fade Niemann, even though he played marvelous golf last week at Greenbrier to get the win. Snedeker is one of a few household names in the field and he closed last season in decent form. It’s not unusual to see him in an event like this since he was in contention at the Safeway Open last fall. And he wouldn’t enter if he wasn’t all in.
Corey Conners -125 vs. Vaughn Taylor
There’s much more than just the Sanderson Farms Championship title at stake for Conners. He has a chance to send a message to International Team captain Ernie Els about his position on the Presidents Cup team. Oh, and he took runner-up here last season with three rounds of 68 and lower. An up and down summer included a win at the Valero Texas Open, and he performed admirably in the three FedExCup playoff events. He ended the season No. 1 in GIR percentage and that will help him in this matchup victory.
