PGA Tour Picks – U.S. Open Matchup Odds and Picks

The PGA Tour’s third major of the season gets underway Thursday with the 119th playing of the U.S. Open at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links along the California Coast. The top players in the world will assemble to try and dethrone two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka, who looks to become just the second player to three-peat at the U.S. Open while searching for his fifth title in the last 10 major championship tournaments. Dustin Johnson came off as the betting favorite and there are a number of tantalizing matchups available to wager on at BookMaker.eu. Below is a list of some of the matchups.

Need to Know

Pebble Beach will have a different look than we saw at the Pro-Am back in February. The fairways are narrower, the rough is thicker and the greens, as always, are some of the tiniest landing spots on Tour. The layout will be stretched to 7,000 yards, still short by Tour standards, and that has a way of leveling the playing field. PB is hosting the U.S. Open for just the sixth time and the first since 2010, but the course is familiar with many players who compete in the Pro-Am. With thicker rough surrounding the fairway, accuracy off the tee is more important than distance. And a strong approach game is vital to set up enough scoring opportunities. Only 60 players and ties advance to the weekend.

U.S. Open Matchup Picks

Rory McIlroy -115 vs. Dustin Johnson

DJ opened as the betting favorite, but he’s got nothing on McIlroy, who looks to continue his strong play after thrashing the field north of the border last week. After missing the cut at the Memorial, McIlroy responded with a runaway victory at the Canadian Open, which just happened to be on a short track with poa annua greens. Sound familiar? McIlroy is 0 for 2 at Pebble Beach with a MC at the 2010 U.S. Open and 2018 Pro-Am, but he’s worth the wager the way he’s playing.

Tiger Woods +119 vs. Patrick Cantlay

The Big Cat at plus-odds in a major is another bet waiting to be taken. All the analytics point to Cantlay being a contender this weekend, but those stats don’t take into account just how certain players rise to the occasion. Woods is one of them. Remember his performance here in 2000 when he won by 15 strokes? Okay, so it’s been nearly two decades, but Woods showed he’s got some left in the tank with his Masters win in April. He also had a top-10 at the Memorial as a tune up after a MC at the PGA Championship. There were extenuating circumstances that week and I believe Tiger is ready to roar.

Jon Rahm +114 vs. Rickie Fowler

If anybody could use a strong tournament showing it’s Rahm, and we’re counting on it. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship and again at the Charles Schwab, but before that he was money with a pair of Tour wins and seven other top-10s. And he enjoys teeing it up in the Golden State, saying it reminds him of back home in Spain. He’s had results playing in California with a pair of PGA Tour titles. He finished T9 at The Masters in April and grabbed a pair top-5s with two MCs in last year’s majors. It’s boom or bust in the big ones and he’s ready to break out.

Phil Mickelson +128 vs. Webb Simpson

The way Lefty has been firing the ball all over the course lately it would be easy to fade him. But, remember who won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February? Yep, it was Mickelson. He said prior to that event that he loves PB and the poa annua greens, and he delivered. The course will be setup differently, but it’s a track Lefty enjoys playing and I’m taking him to win this matchup.
