PGA Tour Picks – Valero Texas Open Matchup Odds and Picks

PGA Tour Picks

There is one final PGA Tour stop before the first Major of the season, which takes place this week in San Antonio at the Valero Texas Open. Situated right before The Masters, the field will take a hit with many high-profile players beginning preparations at Augusta, consequently Rickie Fowler is the only member of the OWGR’s top-10 scheduled to compete. And not surprisingly he’s listed as the betting favorite with odds of +750 at BookMaker.eu. Defending champ Andrew Landry, who tamed the course with a 17-under last year, is back to try for a repeat. Below is a list of matchup odds for the tournament taking place at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course.

Need To Know

It’s time to break out the big dogs on this lengthy 7,435-yard layout. The TPC San Antonio fairways are forgiving off the tee and distance is much more important than accuracy on those shots. The overall length and difficult par 5s tend to keep scores down and we’re not going to see many eagle opportunities. Even with four par 5s the course has never averaged under par. Andrew Landry’s 17-under last year was three shots better than any previous titleist since 2010 on this track. The course is exposed to the elements and winds in south Texas are notoriously strong. The forecast calls for tame conditions, but that can and likely will change without notice. Also, if not already invited, a spot in The Masters is given to the winner and only 17 in the field have qualified for the first Major.

Valero Texas Open Matchup Picks

Haotong Li -110 vs. Jhonattan Vegas

Li is down the odds board after missing the cut in his last two stroke play events, but he showed signs of breaking out last week by winning his group and advancing to the round of 16 at the WGC Match Play. He had success earlier this year on the Euro Tour with a solo second at the Saudi International and this field plays into his game. Li’s driving distance and par 5 scoring rank among the best on Tour, though it’s a small sample size. He’s also had strong showings on traditional windy layouts against stiffer competition, and that should come in handy here.

Jason Kokrak -120 vs. Billy Horschel

A pair of top-15 finishes in seven trips to San Antonio isn’t all that special. But take into account Kokrak’s recent form, coupled with his course knowledge, and he becomes a keeper in this matchup. A T2 at Valspar a few weeks ago was his third top-10 in his last four starts and his stats have been off the charts. Kokrak rates out among the leaders in strokes gained tee-to-green and approach, with consistent ball-striking that should allow him to run the course. Horschel has promising course history, but his ball-striking has been an issue of late and that’s deadly.

Tony Finau +100 vs. Rickie Fowler

Fowler is the favorite to win the event, but Finau remains steady in his game. He lost in group play at last week’s WGC Match Play, so he got some work and didn’t have to pay the price of a long weekend, though I’m sure he would’ve rather done that. Still, he has three top-25s in his last three stroke play events and he’s made it to the weekend in every stroke play start this year. He’s improved with the flat stick and has a T3 here two years ago. Fowler’s been off since THE PLAYERS and he’s making his tournament debut on a beast of a course. I’ll take Finau while Rickie figures it out.
