PGA Tour Picks – Wyndham Championship Matchup Odds and Picks

The final event for players to accrue points ahead of the FedExCup Playoffs takes place this week at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. Fresh off the final major and WGC of the season one would expect a watered down field to tee it up at Sedgefield Country Club. While there is a drop in the quality of the field, it’s not as drastic as it’s been in years past. There are 13 players within 50 points of the playoff cutoff line, which will make for some interesting moments. And the matchups for this week’s event are intriguing. Odds for those head-to-head battles are available at top golf sportsbooks.

Need to Know

It was a good week for me on my matchup picks from the WGC with a sparkling 4-1 record. Not as good at the Barracuda where I went 2-3. Overall a nice 6-4 record from the two events cashing in with a nice +120 dog in Sepp Straka. The field this week probably ranks between those two tournaments in terms of quality and I’ll look to keep my roll going. One thing to note is the race for the FedExCup Playoffs. Several players are on the verge of reaching the cutoff and the higher the finish the more points earned. Sedgefield Country Club is a short 7,127 yard layout that plays par 70. It’s not going to frighten the field, but there are some potholes. Water is present on a number of holes while doglegs and small, undulating greens will be a test. The biggest stat this week is accuracy. Stay clean off the tee and chances of scoring low improve drastically.

Wyndham Championship Matchup Picks

Joaquin Niemann +100 vs. Charles Howell III

Niemann has played a lot of golf so the rest following his MC at Royal Portrush may actually be beneficial. At least that’s what I’m hoping as I drop a few bills on the young Chilean to rebound. Niemann was on fire leading up to The Open going 7 for 7 with a pair of T5s, a T10, and nothing outside the top 31. A return to an easier course should help his game as well. His debut at Sedgefield last year produced four sub-par rounds and a T33, so there is room for improvement.

Collin Morikawa +105 vs. Webb Simpson

Simpson is the betting favorite and has been money on this track in the past with a T6 or better in four of the last five years. He’s also riding a run of nice form so it seems foolish to wager against him. But Morikawa has torn up the field and he’s a gamble worth taking. He broke through last week winning the Barracuda to go along with a runner-up at the 3M Open and a T4 at the John Deere Classic. His approach game is a thing of beauty and I doubt we’ll see the title hangover since there is more to prove. I’m jumping off the cliff with Morikawa in hopes of a nice payout.

Brandt Snedeker +145 vs. Paul Casey

We don’t often see players shoot 59. And it’s a rare sight to see that score after a bogey on the opening hole. Snedeker set a course record last year on his way to a wire-to-wire victory, his second Wyndham title and first at Sedgefield. He’s enjoyed playing this layout with three top-5s in his last four trips and five top-10 showings overall. He’s hung around the top of the leaderboard in a number of events this year and enters with four top-20s in his last eight starts. Snedeker likes the course and I like him as a big underdog to win a pile of cash.

Cameron Smith +115 vs. Chez Reavie

Coming off a T12 at last week’s WGC St. Jude Invitational, Smith hits a course he enjoys playing with a lot of confidence. There were some issues with his game a few months back, but it appears those problems have been corrected. In two starts prior to the WGC Smith was T20 and T29, so he’s trending in the right direction. “This is one of my favorite (courses) for the whole season,” Smith said. He showed that two years ago with a T7.

Patrick Reed -135 vs. Billy Horschel

Two hot golfers going head-to-head is probably a matchup I should stay away from. Horschel offers good value at his odds and is a regular in the Wyndham field. However, Reed’s game is strong and the former Masters champ won a memorable playoff here in 2013 and finished among the top 25 in two returns since. A T5 in Detroit and a T10 at Royal Portrush are two of his four consecutive top-25 finishes. It’s hard to ignore Reed in this one, so I won’t.
