Golf betting has become increasingly attractive for sportsbooks with tournaments and events taking place nearly every week during a calendar year. Unlike other sports there is no offseason. And the popularity of the game has bettors flocking to the betting window with a chance to make a few bucks. When events like the Presidents Cup roll around the entire golf world is focused on a singular course with many of the best players in the world competing.
With a loaded roster featuring all 12 members ranked among the OWGR top-25, the US Team is a massive favorite to claim yet another Cup win. The Americans have won eight straight and are 11-1-1 all-time since the first playing in 1994. The Red, White & Blue is listed at -672 to win. The Internationals are +784 with a hefty price tag of +2023 for a tie. And a sister-kisser is always a possibility with the 2003 edition ending in a 17-17 deadlock. That was back when a tie-breaker existed, but three extra holes failed to determine a champion and by mutual agreement the title was shared. The tie-breaker has since been eliminated.
The match play event that covers four days and will be televised on Golf Channel and NBC starts on Sept. 22 with a format similar to what’s used in the Ryder Cup. Teams will play five ‘foursome’ matches on Day 1, five ‘fourball’ matches on Day 2 with four of each contested on Day 3. The final day of competition has 12 singles matches. And of course you can wager on the outcome of daily events and even the score. Let’s take a look at a few team and individual props to see where money can be made on the 2022 Presidents Cup.
Odds to Win Presidents Cup
US Team -672
Internationals +784
Tie +2023
Top US Point Scorer
Scottie Scheffler +600
Patrick Cantlay +600
Xander Schauffele +650
Justin Thomas +675
Certain players are going to play more matches giving them an increased opportunity of accumulating points. When the Americans emerged victorious in 2019 Justin Thomas was the team’s top points-earner going 3-1-1 for 3.5 points. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay went 3-2 earning three points each. They also played the most matches of any golfer. Scheffler and Cantlay are the obvious co-favorites in this category, but if experience matters Thomas and Jordan Spieth +1000are worth a look. The hottest golfer in the competition could be Max Homa after claiming a second straight title at last week’s Fortinet Championship.
Top International Point Scorer
Sungjae Im +485
Hideki Matsuyama +552
Corey Conners +653
Adam Scott +753
Tom Kim +753
The International squad has eight rookies on the roster and though they’ve enjoyed success at different levels over the years, the competition is something that’s a bit different. So it stands to reason that veterans Matsuyama and Scott are among the favorites to lead the squad. Scott is competing in his 10th Presidents Cup while Matsuyama partakes in his fifth. However, it was Im who led the team in 2019 collecting 3.5 points and he’s the favorite to do it again. I do see value in Taylor Pendrith, who at +1300 resides at the bottom of the odds board. His status is misleading since he missed time on the PGA Tour. He racked up five top-15s in six starts upon his return with a T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Pendrith is worth a small investment.
Presidents Cup Correct Score
17.5-12.5 USA +950
18-12 USA +950
17-13 USA +1000
19-11 USA +1000
Picking the correct score is more difficult with the inclusion of ties and half points. I’m sure oddsmakers have some exotic algorithm in order to set lines, but as you can see the top favorites all favor the Americans. They will since Team USA is a big favorite. That doesn’t always guarantee a win, though. All 12 members of the 1998 US team ranked among the OWGR top-30 and they were embarrassed losing 20.5-11.5. A reduction in matches dropped the number of points available to 30 so we’ll never see that final score again. Looking strictly at rankings and stats, the Americans have a big edge. As such there’s reason to believe the score could get out of hand. The more points Team USA wins the higher the odds. There’s a +400 difference on the odds board between the Americans amassing 20 points and 20.5 points. In 2019 the US Team escaped with a 16-14 win with that score priced at +1600 this week.
