The PGA Tour and its membership conclude 2022 with the unofficial QBE Shootout taking place this week. The unique format has 12 two-player teams vying for the title at the Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. The event consists of three rounds beginning on Friday with each round played in a different stroke-play format. The opening round will be a scramble, followed by alternate shot format on Saturday. Final round play will be better ball. The duo of Harris English and Matt Kuchar is back as one of only two teams to have partnered together before. They won this event three times including with a record-breaking performance two years ago. The pair is second on the odds board behind Jason Day/Billy Horschel. LPGA stars Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson are in the field though their teams are positioned at the bottom of the odds board. Odds Analysis
Harris English / Matt Kuchar +616
It’s hard to imagine these two not being near the top of the odds board considering all the success they’ve enjoyed in this tournament. Few players and no team have as much experience in this event with the pair hooking up for the eighth time. Their 34-under in 2013 was a record until they busted that two years ago with a 37-under to win by a whopping nine-swings. English recently returned from hip surgery earlier this year, but he’s played well in a few events and will be focused on the chemistry he and Kuchar have displayed at Tiburon. The team aspect appears to bring out the best in both players and I have no issues backing them.
Max Homa / Kevin Kisner +758
This duo is the other returning team and it’s no coincidence they are near the top of the odds board. They settled in for a T5 last year and were also teammates at the Presidents Cup a few months back. Homa had a strong start to the season with a successful title defense at the Fortinet Championship and a pair of top-25s before the season officially broke. One thing that stands out about this team is their eagerness to get back in the saddle after both players struggled at the Hero World Challenge with Homa 17th and Kisner 19th in the 20-man field.
Tom Hoge / Sahith Seegala +733
Both players missed the cut at the Zurich Classic with different partners earlier in the year in a tournament with a similar format. So why not team up to see what happens. Theegala closed last season as a top rookie threat and has three top-6 finishes in six starts this season, most recently a T2 at the RSM Classic. It was less than a year ago Hoge recorded his first Tour victory winning at Pebble Beach with the run continuing this season. I’m not too worried about MCs in his previous two Tour starts, which are overshadowed by four straight top-15s. Two solid players teaming up is never a bad thing at an event like this.
Steve Stricker / Cameron Young +1115
The veteran Stricker comes in on a major heater with three wins in his last four starts on the Champions Tour. You might overlook him due to his age but the format of this event allows him to compete just fine with the younger players. And making his 13th start in this event gives him an experience edge in another area. Young snuck up on a lot of folks last season with five of his seven top-10s leaving him as runner-up. He had a good showing in the Bahamas last week despite his driver not cooperating. That’s less of a factor this week and if he remains hot with the putter this team looks like a good risk at the price.
Keith Mitchell / J.J. Spaun +1014
Mitchell and Spaun have played well of late giving them some value. Mitchell has a potent driver looking to take advantage of the lengthy layout while Spaun has shown noticeable improvement with his putting. He’s also a good shot off the tee making this duo a multi-dimensional threat. The key rests in the short game. Neither has been especially good on approach and if just one of them finds his game this team should be in the running.
Course: Tiburon Golf Club Gold Course – 7,382-yards, Par-72
The Tiburon Golf Club Gold Course has hosted every tournament since 2001. At just under 7,400 yards, the layout is a relatively long par 72, but by no means is it a difficult play for the PGA pros. The course is lined with pine trees with a number of water hazards also coming into play. It’s an aesthetically pleasing layout that can bite back in a big way with a number of bunkers lining fairways and greens. Distance off the tee is a key due to the yardage, but accuracy is more important considering the number of hazards. The most important hole is the 17th. It’s a reachable par 5 and a team needing to pick up strokes has to do it here with a long par-4 waiting to close out the round.
