With Scottie Scheffler taking the week off we have a different favorite to win the RBC Canadian Open. However, considering his recent success in this tournament there’s a good chance Rory McIlroy would have topped the odds board anyway. McIlroy won consecutive titles beating the field by seven swings in 2019, the last time Hamilton Golf and Country Club hosted. He also won in 2022 and was the longest defending champ since the tournament was cancelled in the two years between McIlroy’s victories. Nick Taylor became the first Canadian to win his national open in nearly seven decades when he topped Tommy Fleetwood in a playoff last year. Taylor is Canada’s top ranked golfer and he leads a contingent of around 25 Canucks in the field, including among others Corey Conners, Adam Hadwin, and Hamilton native Mackenzie Hughes. Odds Analysis
Tommy Fleetwood +1600
It’s hard to believe Fleetwood has yet to win on Tour in 136 career starts. He does have eight international titles, though, and he’s been close to securing that maiden PGA trophy. One of his closest attempts took place last year at St. George’s when he lost the Canadian Open on the fourth playoff hole when Taylor sunk a 72-foot eagle putt. That setback didn’t seem to deter Fleetwood, who has 12 top 10s in the 12 months since that hearbreak, including a win at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Invitational in January.
Adam Hadwin +4000
I have to go with a Canadian in this section since it is the national open for the country. Hadwin was within one shot of the lead entering the final round of the 2019 Canadian Open and had the best finish of countrymen with a T6. He has landed four top 10s this season despite some inconsistencies in his game. But playing for your country has a way of bringing out the best in players and when he’s good Hadwin has been in contention.
Shane Lowry +2200
It’s been a decent three months for Lowry, who back in March earned back-to-back top 5 finishes at the Cognizant Classic and Arnold Palmer. With a hint of sarcasm he admitted his partner McIlroy carried the pair to their title in New Orleans. Proving he’s solid on his own ball, Lowry carded a third round 62 to finish with a share of sixth at the PGA Championship. He also played well at the 2019 tournament earning a share of runner-up honors.
Mac Meissner +8000
When Taylor won this event last year he had a similar price tag so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that it happens again. Besides, Meissner has been fearless and boasts plenty of confidence after securing a T5 at the Schwab. Meissner had a successful run at U.S. Open final qualifying and had a T13 at the Myrtle Beach Classic prior to that. Backing him is a longshot but one that will payout handsomely should Meissner continue his run of solid play.
Sahith Theegala +2000
Theegala has been a machine this year racking up five top 10s among seven top 20s. He bounced back from a MC and T52 in his previous two starts to finish T12 at the PGA Championship. And if he didn’t make a few miscalculations in a closing 73 he would have had a better finish. Still, it was the kind of outing you like to see from a young player after two poor results. And his ability to flourish with every stick in the bag always makes him a threat.
Course: Hamilton Golf and Country Club – 7,084 yards, Par 70
One of the oldest and most respected courses in the country, Hamilton Golf and Country Club located in the province of Ontario, will be hosting its seventh Canadian Open. However, the course will look much different than it did the last time hosting in 2019. Annually ranked among Canada’s best, a major renovation project began on the property not long after Rory McIlroy’s 7-shot win, which was the largest margin since 1952. An additional 112 yards was tacked on and every green and bunker was redone. At under 7,100 yards and par 70 it’s still short by Tour standards, but an assortment of doglegs and fairway bunkers make a number of holes challenging. Iron and wedge play will be a factor but, as always, so will the use of the flat stick.
