Glen Abbey Golf Course will be the host site for the RBC Canadian Open which begins on Thursday. It is probably the last time the course will host the tournament, as Golf Canada announced Hamilton G&CC will host the event next season. Despite the fact this event follows the Open Championship, it has attracted a very strong field, with 12 of the Top 50 in the world expected to compete, including World No. 1 Dustin Johnson. Odds Analysis
Dustin Johnson +625
Johnson couldn’t find the fairways last week at the Open and missed the cut. He should bounce back this week, as he still is ranked as the No. 1 player in the world and he has eight top 10 finishes this season. He has played well at Glen Abbey in the past with a tie for 2nd in 2013 and 2016 and a tie for 8th last year.
Brooks Koepka +1050
It is hard for me to get excited about taking Koepka considering he has one PGA Tour win other than his two U.S. Open titles and that win came at the 2015 Phoenix Open. Until Koepka shows me he can win something other than the U.S. Open I am not betting him.
Tony Finau +1450
Finau is getting some action from bettors this week. He has 11 top 10 finishes since 2017 including a tie for 5th at the Canadian Open. Finau has the length to take advantage of the soft course but he needs to putt better to win. He is just 126th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting.
Tommy Fleetwood +1525
Fleetwood was in the mix last week at the Open until a poor final round. Fleetwood is 13th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: tee to green. Fleetwood always seems to be in contention and a win in Canada would not be a surprise.
Bubba Watson +2351
Bubba hasn’t played well in the big events lately, but in other events he has been really good. He finished second in this event in 2015. Bubba is third on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee.
Charley Hoffman +2689
I think there is value on Hoffman at these odds. He led the Canadian Open last year until losing the lead in the final round and eventually losing in a playoff to Vegas. Hoffman has played well seemingly every time at Glen Abbey. He is also playing well of late, with four straight top 20 finishes.
Kevin Kisner +3575
I am surprised the number on Kisner is so high. He played well at the Open last week and if he can avoid a letdown he could contend this week. He is 17th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting. He is also in the top 40 in driving accuracy. I think he could contend again this week.
Course: Glen Abbey Golf Course is a par 72 that measures 7,253 yards. It opened in 1977 and was designed by Jack Nicklaus. It features some “Valley Holes” on the back nine which look down from the tee at the fairway. Sixteen Mile Creek is part of the course on the back nine so water is in play and there are over 100 bunkers scattered on the course.
