The reboot to the PGA Tour season went off in spectacular fashion last week in Texas. A number of the same players involved in that event make the trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for Thursday’s opening of the RBC Heritage, hosted by Harbour Town Golf Links. Daniel Berger, an 85/1 long shot, took home the hardware in a playoff at Colonial, outlasting a number of highly-ranked players. Berger will peg it up this week, though his odds aren’t nearly as steep. Just like last week the top five players in the OWGR are set to play led by No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who is also the betting favorite. The best players in the world make for intriguing matchups. Need to Know
Just like Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson and a few other notable players, I struggled at Colonial hitting just one of my matchup picks. Like them I chiseled off the rust and am ready to give it another go. The numbers weren’t bad before the layoff and I expect to be back in the black soon. By no means is Harbour Town long, stretching out to about 7,100 yards, but it is tricky and the tree-lined fairways can play havoc on missed tee shots, even ones that land on the fairway. Accuracy will be tested on approach with the greens some of the smallest on Tour. Also, with its location along the coast we could also have wind come into play, making things even more difficult. We won’t see a lot of eagles and the birdie rate is low making par a good friend.
RBC Heritage Matchup Picks
Matt Kuchar -138 vs. Daniel Berger
Proof that last week means nothing once the guys tee off on Thursday is this matchup and my pick. Berger toppled the field in a playoff and Kuchar was done after 36 holes, so naturally, I’m going with Kooch. There is a good reason for my selection. Kuchar’s history at Harbour Town just can’t be overlooked. He’s played the weekend in all 15 starts since 2004 with eight endings among the top-15. He emerged victorious in 2014 and has gone 5-T9-T11-T23-2 since. Plus, there’s no way Berger repeats. Is there?
Sung-Jae Im -113 vs. Patrick Reed
One of the hottest golfers for over a year, Im didn’t miss a beat in last week’s return shooting 11-under to tie for 10th. You’d think for a guy who doesn’t like to take time off that the lockdown would have been a distraction. That wasn’t the case with four sub-par rounds at Colonial. Im is machine-like in his approach to the game and his consistency is a thing of beauty. Reed also had a good showing in his return, but the lack of consistent play has me leaning on Im.
Rory McIlroy -147 vs. Justin Thomas
Well, it had to happen at some point, didn’t it? McIlroy dominated the field before the shutdown placing among the top five in every tournament he played. That got him to and helped him maintain the No. 1 world ranking. His finish last week was alarming with a final round 74 dropping him nine swings off the lead into a tie for 32nd. We warned last week that McIlroy had never played Colonial and there’s a bit of the same this time. He hasn’t played Harbour Town since 2009. I’m banking on McIlroy learning a few things and getting his swing back in shape.
Jon Rahm -147 vs. Collin Morikawa
We missed the ticket with Rahm last week putting the Spaniard high on our list of winners. After missing the cut at Colonial for a second straight year he probably won’t be back anytime soon. At least he won’t face that possibility at Harbour Town since he’s making his debut. There are few weaknesses in Rahm’s game, but he just couldn’t get the putts to drop. I’ll give him a pass since the layoff affected players differently, and I expect him to be near the top this time around.
Bryson DeChambeau -122 vs. Justin Thomas
Somebody was busy over the shutdown. Showing off his new look, DeChambeau was a beast last week finishing one-shot off the lead. Bombing tee shots isn’t a necessity, but he showed last week that it can work. He has a similar layout at Harbour Town and has tamed the track with a pair of top-5s in four trips.
