In an attempt to entice some of the game’s bigger names to compete less than a week after the conclusion of the season’s first major, the RBC Heritage got a boost as one of the PGA Tour’s designated events. As a result the field also got a boost with Masters champion Jon Rahm, PLAYERS titlist Scottie Scheffler and defending champ Jordan Spieth among the group making the short trip to Hilton Head from Augusta. Absent from the 55th playing of the event, however, is OWGR No. 3 Rory McIlroy, who withdrew early in the week. That leaves Rahm and Scheffler as co-betting favorites on the opening PGA Tour odds and the only players with shorter than 10/1 odds. The designated event status upped the stakes, though, making the field in this year’s edition the strongest. Odds Analysis
Patrick Cantlay +1200
I find myself gravitating towards Cantlay for a few reasons. Not only is he a good player on a nice run of form, he also has the benefit of some guys probably not wanting to be here. I think Rahm would rather be elsewhere modeling his new green jacket and there’s a reason why Scheffler never played in this event. That leaves me with the next wave of favorites and Cantlay fits the bill. He’s coming off a T14 at the Masters, his fifth straight top-20 with two of those putting him in the top 5. He also has three top-3s in five starts here, including a playoff loss last year.
Matt Fitzpatrick +3000
A recent back injury cut into Fitzpatrick’s form and I’m sure had something to do with MCs in four of six starts in February and early March. He looked a whole lot better last week consistently striking the ball en route to a top-10 at Augusta. He has the game to successfully navigate Harbour Town and showed that with three top-15s, including a top-5, prior to a MC last year. He comes in at a good price for a guy who checks all the boxes.
Russell Henley +4500
Like any game, golf is about momentum and confidence. And Henley’s a player bursting with both after a career best finish in a major. The Georgia native strutted to a T4 at Augusta with the supposed weakest part of his game coming through. Henley is accurate off the tee with strong iron play, but his putting has never been the best. Everything was working well last week and a confident Henley at this price has me salivating over the prospects.
Sungjae Im +3000
It’s almost like Im gets overlooked. He’s good enough to keep playing and earning loads of cash but he’s yet to enter the winner’s circle this season. And we know he’s a talented enough player to win more tournaments. He’s 13 of 14 this season claiming four top-10s along the way. And he’s adjusted to his surroundings at Harbour Town with a pair of top-25s after MCs in his first two twirls around the property.
Collin Morikawa +1600
Spieth was on my radar until he recently confessed to being exhausted. He’ll play but he won’t be the same so I faded the defending champ and instead backed Morikawa. It’s been nearly two years since Morikawa last won so he should be motivated. And when he’s on his game is a good fit for Harbour Town. He’s been consistent with only one MC this season and he’s racked up four top-10s in eight starts in 2023, including a T10 at Augusta.
Course: Harbour Town Golf Links – 7,121 yards, Par 71
Consistently ranked as one of the top courses in America, Harbour Town Golf Links is a layout PGA Tour pros play on a yearly basis. Things are a bit different this time around, though. A status boost increased the prize money while attracting players that normally wouldn’t make the trek. Rahm makes just his second appearance while Scheffler is debuting. At just over 7,100 yards the course is short by Tour standards, but it makes up for the lack of length with narrow fairways and tiny greens. Accuracy and positioning off the tee are important. Tee shots that land in the fairway could still be obstructed by overhanging trees bringing luck into the equation. The birdie rate is low and eagles are nearly out of the question making par a good friend. Spieth’s 13-under was the seventh time in the last 10 editions the winner finished at that number or lower.
