Outside of Dustin Johnson, who won last week’s tournament, some of the big name players on the PGA Tour haven’t had a lot of success since the reboot. Many of them are taking this week off leaving an open field for the second playing of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Three of the OWGR top-10 are scheduled to appear, much less than the first three events when players returned to the links to chisel off the rust of a three-month layoff. That leaves an opening for someone down the odds chart to make a move, though they’ll have to upend betting favorite Bryson DeChambeau. It also gives us some intriguing matchups to wager on. Need to Know
I had a better week at the Travelers with two matchup wins, including Jordan Spieth who was +135. I remain COVID free, but not everyone on the Tour does. After emerging unscathed through the first post-hiatus tournament, COVID has played havoc forcing a number of players to withdraw. The latest was Harris English, who tested positive upon his arrival in Detroit. Others may also be forced to WD as the week progresses. Playing at 7,334 yards and par 72, the Detroit Golf Club is a relatively straightforward track, though it remains a mystery to some since this is just the second playing. Just how unpredictable is the course? Last year’s winner Nate Lashley was a late qualifier and took the trophy with a wire-to-wire win. The property consists of two courses with 17 holes of the North Course being played along with one from the South Course, allowing for more length. The ruff was also grown to try and make things a little more difficult. With a balance of long and short holes the track will test the skills. After passing through tree-lined fairways players take aim at small undulating greens that are guarded by bunkers. By pro standards it’s an easy track and should yield low scores.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Picks
Rory Sabbatini +103 vs. Kevin Na
This is a solid matchup between players entering on a wave of good form. It’s typically one to stay away from, but I like the way Sabbatini is playing and his showing here last year leads me to believe something big is in store. He went T14-T21 in two starts since the reboot and he topped the field here last year in fairways hit and par-5 scoring en route to T3. Meanwhile, Na is playing DGC for the first time.
Brandt Snedeker -126 vs. Kevin Kisner
After grabbing a share of fifth last year at Detroit Golf Club, Snedeker raved about the course. His work on and around the greens was a big reason why: he ranked fifth among the field in strokes gained: putting. Snedeker does well on courses just like this one; his last victory came on a Donald Ross-designed layout at the Wyndham Championship in 2018. Post-lockdown form has been sketchy, but he did get unhinged with a T41 last week.
Doc Redman -118 vs. Adam Hadwin
Redman has fond memories of this event. After all it was a runner-up finish last year that he parlayed into a Tour card. There are a handful of players who competed in 2019 giving them an edge, and Redman enters riding the best form among that group. He’s made the cut in all three events with superior ball striking, posting his best finish with a T11 at last week’s Travelers where he finished with a final round 63.
Tyrrell Hatton +115 vs. Webb Simpson
Players at the top of the odds board should put on a show at DGC. Following his RBC Heritage win, Simpson took last week off when a family matter tested positive for COVID-19. It will be interesting to see how he handles the post-virus stretch. Hatton, meanwhile, came close to bookending the shutdown with victories following his T3 at Harbour Town, finishing 2-shots back of Simpson. Hatton won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March right before the shutdown.
Brian Stuard -106 vs. Keegan Bradley
I’m going off the radar a bit with this matchup, but I like Stuard after he claimed a top-20 last week. His ending could have and should have been happier except for a pair of bogeys that moved him out of the top-10. Overall he was consistent during the week shooting 68 or better in all four rounds to finish at 12-under. He’s 3 for 3 since the restart and finished T5 here last year.
