One of the newer events on the PGA Tour has the field in Detroit for the fifth edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic . The tournament was pushed back over a month last year with Tony Finau escaping with a five-swing win after posting a tournament scoring record. Back to its customary spot on the calendar, three of the previous four winners are set to be in attendance with Finau, Cam Davis and Nate Lashley all looking to become the first two-time RMC winner. With no more designated events and the season’s last major a few weeks away, many notables are not in attendance. The field still has star power, though, with Finau the betting favorite in the outright market and one of five players ranked among the OWGR top 20. VIDEO Need to Know
Playing at 7,370 yards, the Detroit Golf Club is a relatively straightforward stock par 72 track. Recent weather episodes and acts of vandalism damaged sections of the course, but the tournament will play on thanks to the grounds crew. The property consists of two courses with 17 holes of the North Course being played along with one from the South Course. A redesign on the 12th-hole tee box added 30 yards ahead of the 2022 playing, though it’s still relatively easy to navigate. DGC is one of the flattest courses on Tour with a good mix of long and short holes to test a player’s skill level. Finau won by five swings last year finishing with a record 26-under 262. Scoring is easy with the four past winners at 18-under or better.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Picks
Rickie Fowler +100 vs. Tony Finau
I like Finau and him being the defending champ puts him in a good spot. However, he hasn’t been the consistent force we’ve seen in the past while Fowler has done nearly everything but win this season. I’ve backed Fowler several times in matchups and he’s made me coin going 17 of 19 with seven top 10s among his 14 top 25s. He finished inside the top 15 in seven of his last eight starts and has a personal best T12 in four starts at DGC. I’ll back Fowler at even money.
Hideki Matsuyama -105 vs. Sungjae Im
I don’t often bet against Im in matchups, but here I am backing Matsuyama because it appears as though he’s recovered nicely from the neck injury that forced a brief hiatus. And the price is a little better, which is something I can easily take. Matsuyama was playing well before the injury and continued after with paydays in nine straight starts, five of which landed him inside the top 20. He comes in off a T13 at River Highlands and has a pair of top 25s at DGC on his resume.
Justin Thomas +105 vs. Collin Morikawa
I’m betting on Thomas improving or at the very least playing the same as he did at the Travelers, which is something I know he can do. For the first time in a while JT looked comfortable blasting irons all over River Highlands to lead the field in par-3 scoring en route to a T9. It was his best finish since solo fourth at the Phoenix Open in February. He’s debuting in this event but his game is fit for the DGC layout.
Austin Eckroat -128 vs. Brendon Todd
I typically don’t go with someone at this price in a matchup but Eckroat intrigues me. He’s played the weekend in his last seven starts finishing among the top 30 in each of his last five with a T2 at the Byron Nelson and T10 at the U.S. Open. He’s shown the ability to go low on courses that allow it and DGC certainly fits that scenario.
Cam Davis -120 vs. Stephan Jaeger
Davis proved he can master the DGC layout winning a playoff two years ago and posting a T14 in his title defense. When he finishes he tends to go high up the leaderboard with three top 10s in his previous 10 starts. And he played with the big boys going T6 at THE PLAYERS and T4 at the PGA Championship. His success at DGC is the driving force that has me leaning his way.
