A relatively new tournament on the PGA Tour sends the field to Detroit for the sixth playing of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Coming one week after the season’s final Signature Event and a few weeks ahead of the final major, the event lands in a precarious spot on the schedule with several of the game’s biggest stars taking the week off. A tough-luck playoff loser at the Travelers last week, Tom Kim was positioned as the outright betting favorite with favorable odds for a player in his position. That also signifies the field is wide open with a player further down the odds board likely sticking out. Rickie Fowler ended a four-year championship drought with his playoff win last year becoming the fifth different winner in the tournament’s history. Nate Lashley and Cameron Davis are also former winners scheduled to peg it up at Detroit Golf Club on Thursday. Need to Know
Playing at 7,370 yards, the Detroit Golf Club is a relatively straightforward stock par 72 track. The property consists of two courses with 17 holes of the North Course being played along with one from the South Course. A redesign on the 12th-hole tee box added 30 yards ahead of the 2022 playing, though it’s still relatively easy to navigate. DGC is one of the flattest courses on Tour with a good mix of long and short holes to test a player’s skill level. Since the inaugural event in 2019, the average winning score is 23.2 strokes under par. Tony Finau established a scoring record at 26-under to win the 2022 event by five swings. Fowler, Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa all finished 72 holes at 24-under last year. It’s been all or nothing in this tournament with two previous editions going to a playoff while the other three were decided by at least three shots.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchup Picks
Akshay Bhatia vs. -110 vs. Min Woo Lee
Putting together a solid season, Bhatia is coming off a season-best T5 finish at last week’s Travelers Championship where he put together three rounds of 65 or lower on a course that yields plenty of birdies, much like the DGC. It was his 10th top 25 of the campaign that also included a win at the Texas Open in April. Improved work with the putter led to a T16 at the U.S. Open with the work carrying over to last week.
Michael Thorbjornsen +125 vs. Ben Griffin
Following four highly successful seasons at Stanford, which is a factory for both men’s and women’s championship caliber golfers, Thorbjornsen debuted on Tour last week with a respectable T39 finish. He earned his Tour card as the No. 1 player in the 2024 PGA Tour University class and is seemingly destined for greatness. There will be less pressure this week and his game features mammoth drives that he can turn into scoring opportunities at DGC. It might be too early, but I’m grabbing him before the betting markets catch up.
Cameron Champ +107 vs. Bud Cauley
On a course with generous fairways and few hazards that rewards big hitters, Champ is a player who can take advantage. We’re able to buy him at plus odds because it’s been a horrible season with 10 MCs, including four straight. But Champ has had success on the DGC layout with a pair of top 20s and three paydays. The course doesn’t penalize poor shots as much as others, which is something that will help Champ break out of his slump.
Taylor Montgomery +120 vs. Jhonattan Vegas -144
I made some money in tournament matchups backing Montgomery when he burst onto the scene in the fall of 2022. He finished among the top 15 in eight of nine starts during that time. However, it’s been a struggle for him recently backing out of the PGA Championship last month with two other WDs in his previous three starts. Montgomery has played well in similar field events over his career and the DGC is a good place to work out the kings. I’ll take a risk at his price.
Cameron Young +125 vs. Tom Kim -150
Taking into consideration this is the ninth straight week Kim is playing, that workload will catch up to players, even if you are just 22. Given that he’s on a nice streak I wouldn’t normally bet against Kim, but Young’s display last week and his performance two years ago in his lone RMC start has me backing the guy with a nice price tag. Young opened the season with five top 10s in 10 starts worldwide and twirled a nifty 59 at the Travelers to earn a share of ninth. At the RMC two years ago he went 63-65 in the middle rounds to finish T2.
