It’s back to every man for himself when the PGA Tour season resumes this week in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. With only one Ryder Cup participant in the field there hasn’t been much talk about Team Europe’s decisive win. And there shouldn’t be since the team concept is no longer a thing. However, Ludvig Aberg will look to continue his run of form that continued in the European’s win in Italy last week. Aberg makes the trek stateside as the betting favorite in the outright market and as a sizable favorite in his tournament matchups. Defending champ Mackenzie Hughes was as high as 100/1 in the outright market last year and the field is similar allowing for some uneasy finishes. Need to Know
A move to the fall in 2014 also brought a change in venue with the 7,461-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson serving as host for the 10th straight year. In 2019 the tournament got a boost to stand-alone status with a full 500 FedExCup points awarded to the winner. As a result we’ve seen a bump in the talent pool, though taking place a week after the Ryder Cup hurts the field. Players get a resort course this week that’s yielded low scores in the past. Sam Burns established a tournament course record at 22-under in 2021 and the past eight winners all scored -17 or better. Tree-lined fairways, greenside bunkers on a number of holes, and water around six others are merely obstacles and not hazards.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Ludvig Aberg -138 vs. Stephan Jaeger
Aberg is the top dog in the field and although his price is high I’m backing him anyway. There is some concern since he’s the only player making the trip from Italy after celebrating with his Ryder Cup teammates, but continuing to play on his current heater makes plenty of sense. Just over the last eight months he’s won four college tournaments, earned a victory on the DP World Tour and helped Team Europe by going 2-2-0. It’s hard to avoid him even at this price.
Emiliano Grillo -110 vs. Keith Mitchell
Grillo is another player looking to continue a solid run of form. He earned a spot in the TOUR Championship with a playoff win at the Schwab, one of his seven top 10s this season. He reached the FedExCup Playoff on a roll with a T15-T6-T10 in three of his last four regular season starts. And why not return to a familiar venue that yielded him a T5 last year in his fourth straight appearance in Jackson.
Kevin Streelman +108 vs. Alex Noren
When looking for value picks finding ones comfort zone is a huge plus. While Streelman’s best days may be behind him, he’s good for a strong showing every now and then, and CC of Jackson is what you could call his comfort zone. He’s made the cut in five of his last six starts here with two top 10s and no finish outside the top 35. It isn’t a glaring vote of confidence, but at plus odds Streelman has plenty of value.
Peter Malnati -120 vs. Chesson Hadley
There’s something to be said about players with a history at a certain golf course. I would have liked if Malnati had shorter odds, but given his history at CC of Jackson I’ll back him at this price anyway. And since he’s coming in off a nice effort in Napa I’m going to feel even better about backing him. His only Tour win so far came at this joint in 2015 and he finished as runner-up in 2020 going 7 for 8 in his career.
Tom Hoge +110 vs. Davis Thompson
During the dead time on Tour Hoge ventured to the DP World Tour and secured a T14 at the BMW PGA Championship just a few weeks ago for his best finish in several months. Since the middle of July he has four top 25s on his resume. He has a history at this venue with eight previous starts though the results haven’t been spectacular. I’m not backing him for the outright only to win this matchup, and at his price I’ll do it confidently.
