After another victory for Team USA at the Presidents Cup, the PGA Tour resumes its fall season in Jackson, Miss. with the annual Sanderson Farms Championship. No Americans and only one player who competed last week in Canada will tee it up at the Country Club of Jackson, the tournament host since 2014. Canadian Mackenzie Hughes, who won this event in 2022, starred for the International team and is listed among the outright favorites. However, topping the odds board on the early line is two-time regular season titlist Nick Dunlap, who won The American Express and Barracuda Championship. Last year Luke List survived a five-man playoff to claim his second career Tour title and he’s next in line at a chance to become the first back-to-back winner since Dwight Nevil in 1974. Need to Know
A move to the fall in 2014 also brought a change in venue with the 7,461-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson serving as host for the 11th straight year. In 2019 the tournament got a boost to stand-alone status with a full 500 FedExCup points awarded to the winner. As a result we’ve seen a bump in the talent pool, though taking place a week after the Presidents Cup hurts the turnout. Players get a resort course that’s yielded low scores in the past. Sam Burns established a tournament course record at 22-under in 2021 and the past nine winners all scored -17 or better. List won a five-player playoff last year, the second straight time and third in five years that extra holes were required to determine a champion. Tree-lined fairways, greenside bunkers on a number of holes, and water around six others are merely obstacles and not hazards.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Harris English +118 vs. Jhonattan Vegas
I have had success on matchups backing English in the past so taking him at this price is a plus. It is a risky move, though, since his game has been garbage recently, which is why you can get him at plus odds. Sometimes you have to play a hunch and I have a feeling English is due. He’s been fairly consistent over his career but he’s finished outside the top 30 in each of his last eight starts. He’s had success on resort courses in the past and he was T6 at this event in 2019.
Matt McCarty -105 vs. Sam Stevens
An unassuming field is a good way for someone to start their PGA Tour venture. McCarty makes his debut in a non-major after a stellar Korn Ferry Tour stint that saw him accumulate the most points. He won three times on the KFT in a six start span this summer racked up five other top 5s this year, including just last week when he finished three shots off the lead at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship.
Maverick McNealy +100 vs. Keith Mitchell
It’s hard to believe McNealy’s been playing professionally since 2017 and that he’s still searching for his first victory. An injury that required plenty of rest set him back last year leading to bouts of inconsistency. A T7 at the Canadian Open and T3 at the 3M Open were sandwiched around two MCs. He is 54th in the FedExCup standings and can strengthen his position with a strong fall campaign. And this is the type of field that will allow him to do that.
Rickie Fowler +100 vs. Patton Kizzire
One of the more recognizable names in the field, Fowler pegs it up for the first time since The Open in July. That can be both good and bad. It’s not like he was on any sort of heater with only one top 20 all season, but with family issues now behind him he can concentrate on his game in an event with no pressure.
Nick Dunlap -110 vs. Patrick Fishburn
When it comes to picking a favorite in a field like this you can almost flip a coin. And with short odds in this matchup why not back the fave. Dunlap won twice on Tour this season and had a successful run in his first FedExCup playoff placing among the top 5 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T31 at the BMW Championship. And his game seems like a good fit for the resort course layout.
