It’s back to every man for himself when the PGA Tour season resumes this week in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. The team format at the Presidents Cup was fun with Team USA dominating for a ninth consecutive win over the International squad. The fall schedule on Tour is typically thin and that’s the case this week with defending champ and outright betting favorite Sam Burns the highest ranked player in the field at No. 12. Burns is also the only member of the US Presidents Cup team to peg it up this week and he’s featured prominently in tournament matchups as a prohibitive favorite. Need to Know
A move to the fall in 2014 also brought a change in venue with the 7,461-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson serving as host for the ninth straight year. In 2019 the tournament got a boost to stand-alone status with a full 500 FedExCup points awarded to the winner. As a result we’ve seen a bump in the talent pool, though taking place a week after the Presidents Cup hurts the field. Players get a resort course this week that’s yielded low scores in the past. Burns established a tournament course record at 22-under last year and the past seven winners all scored -18 or better. Tree-lined fairways, greenside bunkers on a number of holes, and water around six others are merely obstacles and not hazards.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Sahith Theegala -106 vs Russell Henley
Theegala made a run at rookie of the year last season only to come up short. And he’s looking to continue his string of solid outings by making up for a rare misstep at this tournament last year. The final record shows Theegala finished with a share of eighth, but things could have been much different. In the lead entering the final round, he closed with a 71 to collect a top-10, one of five among his 11 top-25s in 32 starts. Theegala opened the new season with a T6 in Napa.
Taylor Montgomery +104 vs. Keegan Bradley
Montgomery is looking to use his success on the Korn Ferry Tour to start his PGA career on a positive note. In a way that already happened when he grabbed a podium finish a few weeks ago in Napa. He’s matched against a Tour veteran and at plus odds I have to take a look, especially after Montgomery compiled nine top-10s in 17 starts on the KFT last season. And the number of starts includes his first two when he stumbled mightily with a WD and T47.
Taylor Moore -113 vs. Seamus Power
It looks like my matchup picks are Taylor made since I’m also backing Moore. The price is a bit steeper, but still within my acceptable range for a value pick. Jackson CC has fond memories for the Texan since it’s where he earned his first payday on Tour a few years back. He was T17 last year, the first of his 10 top-25s on the campaign that helped him qualify for the FedExCup playoffs. Four of those finishes came in his last five regular season starts.
Harris English +104 vs. Gary Woodland
First off it’s good to see English back on the course after hip surgery sidelined him for a good chunk of last season. It was disappointing since he was coming off his best year on Tour with a couple of wins earning him a spot on the winning Ryder Cup team. It wasn’t a storybook return with four MCs in his last seven starts of the season, which is why his price is where it is. He did show signs at the Fortinet Championship closing with a 66 to finish T9. And if he’s back in the swing of things English is a great value pick up at plus odds.
Trey Mullinax -109 vs. Wyndham Clark
Saving what could have been a disastrous season, Mullinax aims to keep his run of form going at a place he’s performed well in the past. Things went downhill after Mullinax finished T4 in Jackson last season, but a win at the Barbasol and a T5 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship were part of his 5 for 5 finish with four top-25s. The closing stretch gave Mullinax a much-needed jolt of confidence.
