It’s not a high-profile tournament on the PGA Tour but the Sanderson Farms Championship does offer a full allotment of FedExCup points to the winner as a stand-alone event for the second straight year. That’s enough to attract a few big names to improve the quality of golf at the Country Club of Jackson this week. Forced out of the U.S. Open with a positive COVID test, Scottie Scheffler is back as the betting favorite. The tightly-packed field makes for a number of fun tournament and round matchups. Need to Know
A move to the fall in 2014 also brought a change in venue with the 7,461-yard, par-72 Country Club of Jackson serving as host for a seventh consecutive year. In 2019 the tournament got a boost to stand-alone status with a full 500 FedExCup points awarded to the winner. As a result we’ve seen a bump in the talent pool. The field gets a resort course this week that has yielded low scores in the past. Two years ago Cameron Champ set the 72-hole tournament record on this layout at 21-under. Sebastian Munoz and Sungjae Im advanced to a playoff at 18-under in last year’s edition. Tree-lined fairways, greenside bunkers on a number of holes, and water around six others are merely obstacles and not hazards.
Sanderson Farms Championship Matchup Picks
Carlos Ortiz +102 vs. Lucas Glover
Nothing Ortiz has done would lead you to believe he could win this matchup. He had three MCs before ending last season with a T25 at the BMW Championship. Maybe that was the spark he needed. He opened with a 67 at Silverado playing through the weekend to finish in the top-50. What strikes me about Ortiz, though, is his play at CC of Jackson. In 2018 he finished with a 64 to grab a share of third and last year he carded a pair of 65s for a T4. He’s definitely comfortable on this layout which is why I’m backing him at plus-odds.
Henrik Norlander +108 vs. Keith Mitchell
A slow start to the season has scared a lot of folks away from Norlander, but that’s nothing new for the Swede. At the beginning of last season he had a MC in four straight events before finishing with a consistent flurry. He played through the weekend in six straight tournaments with a T6 at the Memorial his best of three top-30s. He’s a streaky player and at his price I’m betting he gets the game in gear this week.
Doc Redman +103 vs. Adam Long
Long has been dialed in for a few months and that really made me question my pick in this battle. Doc’s been good, too, which is why I’m leaning his direction. Missing out on the U.S. Open is just added motivation for Redman, who grabbed a share of third at the Wyndham and opened the season with another T3 at Silverado. Those resort courses are to Redman’s liking and you can’t complain about his tee-to-green numbers.
Scottie Scheffler -142 vs. Will Zalatoris
I felt bad for Scheffler having to miss the U.S. Open since he was on a nice roll before the tournament. And because of that I expect him to come out with a chip on his shoulder. The reigning Rookie of the Year closed the season with a solo fifth at the TOUR Championship, his third top-5 in six starts. And over that span he finished no worse than T22. The big concern is his stamina after the positive COVID test and his price is high. I’m going to back him anyway since it’s hard not to play when you’re in a groove.
Pat Perez -102 vs. Charley Hoffman -128
As long as he doesn’t withdraw Perez has a good chance to win this matchup and contend for the individual title. He entered the Wyndham off a pair of top-25s only to WD there and the following week at The Northern Trust. It looks like he took care of whatever was on his plate banging out a T9 at Silverado and a T21 at Puntacana to start the new season.
