It’s back to the grind of the PGA Tour season after a break that saw the Europeans snatch the Ryder Cup from the Americans handing Team USA yet another setback on European soil. Only one Ryder Cup participant made the jaunt across the Atlantic to Jackson, Mississippi, for this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship. The one is Team Europe star and Tour rookie Ludvig Aberg, who was positioned atop the outright odds board as well. After Aberg there were 16 players who opened with odds between 40/1 and 60/1 signifying a wide open field. Defending champ MacKenzie Hughes had long odds last year and he’s positioned well below the favorites to become the second repeat champion at this event and the first since the early 1970s. Odds Analysis
Ludvig Aberg +1000
How can I not back Aberg after he burst onto the scene in remarkable fashion? Not only was he a stud at the Ryder Cup he flashed solid form ahead of that with a T4 in the Deere Classic and T14 in the Wyndham Championship. He also won the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour in what was just his ninth pro start. The one drawback is the obvious. Not only did Aberg help Team Europe to victory, he’s also making the long flight to compete in this event. Somehow I don’t think he’ll be fazed by everything.
Eric Cole +2000
Events like this in the fall showcase players who might otherwise get overlooked. One player making a case for Tour rookie of the year is Cole, who has picked up his game since a rocky start. Cole opened the season with four straight MCs before settling down with a T15 at Pebble Beach and a playoff loss at the Honda Classic. He went on a tear the last few months with 11 straight paydays with a best during that span of a T4 last time out at the Fortinet Championship.
Emiliano Grillo +2200
A strong finish to the season and a history at this event has Grillo on my radar of potential winners. Three top 15s in his last four regular season starts got Grillo into the playoffs where he advanced to the TOUR Championship. He’s making his fifth straight start in Jackson coming off his best career finish a year ago. He rallied after an opening 73 to finish 13-under in a tie for 5th. Over his 16 rounds at the CC of Jackson, Grillo has an impressive 69.63 scoring average.
S.H. Kim +3000
Another player with the potential to standout in this field is Kim. He’s yet to win on the PGA Tour but he does have two international victories in 35 career starts and has had a strong season so far with nine top 25s on his resume. His best finish of the year came last time out when he trailed Fortinet Championship winner Sahith Theegala by two swings. He put on a clinic with the putter at this event last year leading the field dropping 17 of 18 putts from between 4 and 8 feet to finish T13 in his Sanderson Farms debut.
Nicholas Lindheim +4500
Falling off the radar and away from the view of oddsmakers after dealing with back injuries for more than a year, Lindheim authored a nice season mostly on the Korn Ferry Tour. He’s 8 for 8 in KFT starts this year with a win and four other top 10s. His most recent outing on the PGA side resulted in a T27 at the Wyndham Championship when he closed with a 65. He’s also familiar with the layout having played this event four times during his career with a best of T7.
Course: Country Club of Jackson – 7,461 yards, Par 72
Jackson, Mississippi’s Country Club course plays host for the 10th consecutive year. The course has a classical design featuring tree-lined fairways that are sometimes difficult to find. However, they are not penal by nature with the field averaging a high number of greens in regulation. There are the typical hazards with two-thirds of the greens guarded by bunkers and water a factor on nearly half the holes. Overall, the layout is scoreable as we saw in 2021 when Sam Burns established a tournament course record at 22-under. At 17-under last year, Hughes had the worst winning score since the debut event at this venue in 2014.
