After a brief stop in the Dominican Republic the PGA Tour is back in the U.S. in Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Elevated to full status last year, the event offers a full allotment of FedExCup points to the winner. As such the field will feature a few bigger names chasing the points at the Country Club of Jackson. However, with last season and the U.S. Open just completed the game’s superstars are hibernating. Scottie Scheffler, making his first start since testing positive for COVID that denied him a spot in the U.S. Open, hit the board as the betting favorite. Sebastian Munoz is back to defend his title after becoming the sixth straight winner to pick up a maiden Tour victory at this event. Odds Analysis
Scottie Scheffler +1010
After his positive COVID test kept him out of the U.S. Open, Scheffler is eager to get back on the course. He would have been a trendy pick at Winged Foot instead he has to settle for being the favorite at Jackson. He ended last season with a solo fifth at the TOUR Championship, his third top-5 among six top-25s in his last six starts. The SFC has produced six straight first-time winners and Scheffler can extend the streak if he’s healthy. I don’t think he’d be playing if he wasn’t.
Sungjae Im +1410
Here I am again at the top of the odds board. Im is always a threat and memories of a blown opportunity are dancing in his head. Taking Munoz to a playoff last year, Im fell on the first sudden-death hole. He maneuvered around the course shooting 18-under and he enters off a solid 22nd at Winged Foot where he led the field in GIR and ranked second in fairways hit. Those are two areas that will definitely serve him well this week.
Beau Hossler +12500
Two things led me to Hossler. Well, three if you count his price tag. Back to the first two which only make the third even sweeter. Players with connections to Texas have historically done well here, and this event can turn into a putting contest. Hossler played collegiately at Texas and has emerged as one of the better putters on Tour checking off critical boxes. He earned a top-10 here back in 2017 when a Sunday 73 knocked him out of contention. Recent form isn’t suggestive of a win with a T23 at Silverado and T41 at Puntacana, but at his current price he’s hard to overlook.
Carlos Ortiz +5500
A connection to the state of Texas and looking for his first win puts Ortiz in almost the same spot as Hossler, except for the price of course. Few if any have done what Ortiz has at CC of Jackson with a pair of top-5s in his two starts. He carded a pair of 65s last year for a T4 and a final round 64 two years ago got him to a T3. Over eight rounds his scoring average is 68.13, which puts him near the top if he can repeat the performance.
Doc Redman +2800
There might be a little added motivation for Redman after he was the first alternate at the U.S. Open. He ranked among the best on Tour tee-to-green last season and he has a T3 at the Wyndham Championship and Safeway Open in his last three starts. He finished strong here last year with a closing 68, but his game has been turned up a notch since then.
Course: Country Club of Jackson – 7,461 yards, Par 72
Jackson, Mississippi’s Country Club course plays host for the seventh consecutive year. The course has a classical design featuring tree-lined fairways that are sometimes difficult to find. However, they are not penal by nature with the field averaging a high number of greens in regulation. There are the typical hazards with two-thirds of the greens guarded by bunkers and water a factor on six holes. Overall, the course is scoreable as we saw last year when Munoz and Sungjae Im finished at 18-under. Cameron Champ set the 72-hole record here in 2018 at 21-under.
