It’s back to the grind of the PGA Tour season after a break that saw Team USA dominate its European counterparts to reclaim the Ryder Cup. Not surprisingly only one Ryder Cup participant is making the trip to Jackson, Mississippi this week for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Fresh off his 10th Ryder Cup, Sergio Garcia is back to defend the title he won here last year. The Spaniard hit the board behind co-betting favorites Sam Burns and Will Zalatoris. Odds Analysis
Sungjae Im +1800
Of all the players near the top of the odds board I have my eye on Im. After some uncharacteristic hiccups in the middle of last season, Im had a strong close to the campaign that included a solo third in the BMW Championship. He finished 20th in the Tour Championship with the staggered start format. He has a brief history on this course with a playoff loss to Sebastian Munoz in 2019 and a 68.6 scoring average over his last eight rounds. The birdie machine will have plenty of opportunities and taking care of those will keep Im in the hunt.
C.T. Pan +8000
Minus a number of big names it pays to look further down the odds board. One player standing out recently is Pan, who secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last month. Pan opened the new season riding a hot putter to a T6 at the Fortinet Championship a few weeks ago and had a fabulous weekend in Jackson last year closing with a pair of 68s to earn a top-15. This is a nice course for him with forgiving fairways allowing his wayward drives to be playable, and I’ll back him at his current price with a nice payday the reward.
Mito Pereira +3300
I backed Pereira in Napa a few weeks ago and, while he didn’t win, a solo third showed why he’s on my radar. Consecutive wins on the Korn Ferry Tour back in June got him a spot on the PGA Tour where he enjoyed some success with a T5 in the Barbasol Championship and T6 in the 3M Open. He followed those tournaments by barely missing the medal stand in the Olympics. With several Tour events under his belt I can see the young Chilean winning sooner rather than later. And it’s time to take advantage before the betting markets catch up.
Kevin Streelman +4000
The veteran hasn’t won on Tour since 2014, but backing Streelman at a venue he’s quite familiar with is a solid approach. And the price makes the decision that much easier. He showed glimpses that he still has game with six top-20s in his last 10 starts, including top-10s in the PGA Championship and Wyndham Championship. He has a pair of top-10s among his three top-20s over his last four starts in this event and closed last year’s event with a 64 to earn solo fourth.
Matthew Wolff +6000
It might be too soon, but if Wolff is teeing it up he’s worth a look. The end to last season was marred by personal struggles and trouble on the course, but when he’s right you can’t argue with his ability. He ended last season with two straight MCs and only one top-20 in his last six starts, which is why he’s available at this price. He had a strong start to the fall last year with back-to-back runner-up showings and a more subdued atmosphere is what he needs to find his mojo. I’ll back him at this price because he’s worth it.
Course: Country Club of Jackson – 7,461 yards, Par 72
Jackson, Mississippi’s Country Club course plays host for the eighth consecutive year. The course has a classical design featuring tree-lined fairways that are sometimes difficult to find. However, they are not penal by nature with the field averaging a high number of greens in regulation. There are the typical hazards with two-thirds of the greens guarded by bunkers and water a factor on six holes. Overall, the course is scoreable as we saw last year when Garcia finished one-shot clear at 19-under. The previous six winners all scored 18-under or better with Cameron Champ setting the 72-hole record on this layout in 2018 at 21-under.
