A number of top players are using this week’s Scottish Open as a prep for next week’s Open Championship. Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama lead the field for this European Tour event. Rarely do a lot of American players compete in a European Tour event, but this week is different, as players want to get ready for next week’s Open Championship in Scotland. Keep in mind that six of the last eight winners of the Open played in the Scottish Open the previous week. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Scottish Open.

Odds Analysis
Justin Rose+900
Rose won this event in 2014 at Royal Aberdeen. He didn’t do as well the next year at Gullane when he tied for 74th. I think Rose is overvalued at these odds simply because of how he played previously at Gullane.
Rickie Fowler+1000
Fowler comes in with plenty of confidence having won on this course in the past. He loves playing links golf and has had a lot of success. This is not a major so there is no worry about Rickie choking in the clutch. You can make a case for him being the favorite this week.
Patrick Reed+1800
I don’t know about taking Reed at these odds. He won the Masters and I am still not sure about taking him as a regular contender yet. He has not been that great in the past on links course but he has the short game to change that. I will pass on Reed this week, but I will be watching closely.
Hideki Matsuyama+2000
We don’t think of Matsuyama as a great links player, but he tied for 6th at Muirfield in 2013 and he had top 20 finishes in 2015 and 2017. Why not this week in Scotland?
Russell Knox+2000
Knox is playing as well as anyone on the European Tour right now, as he is coming off a win at the Irish Open. I almost never take a player to win in back-to-back weeks, so I am not taking Knox even though he did play well on this course in 2015 with a tie for 10th.
Tyrrell Hatton+2000
Hatton tied for 5th in the Open at Troon two years ago and he almost always plays well on links courses. I think he has a ton of value at these odds and is definitely worth a play.
Andy Sullivan+2500
Sullivan has been playing well with five top ten finishes in seven starts. He is an excellent scramblers and he has played well at Gullane in the past. He is the first of my longshots for this week.
Rafael Cabrera Bello+3300
I don’t know why RCB is listed with odds this high. He has played well in the past on links courses and he had a tie for 4th in last year’s Open Championship.
Charley Hoffman+5500
I can’t leave out Charley at these big odds. He seems to be rounding into form with a tie for 20th at the U.S. Open and a tie for 15th at the Travelers.
Course: This year’s Scottish Open is being held at Gullane in East Lothian. It was used for this event in 2015 when Rickie Fowler got the win. This course is a par 70 that measures 7,133 yards. There are just two par 5’s on the course. The course sets up well for big hitters, but it should be noted that the greens are small and well protected by bunkers. Scrambling is a key stat to consider this week.
