The start of a new year means the resumption of the PGA Tour and this time it’s the start of a new season. And there’s no better place to get things going than on the Hawaiian island of Maui. A record number of players consisting of 2023 Tour winners and the top 50 in the FedExCup standings will kick off the two-tournament Hawaii swing in what is now known simply as The Sentry. One notable player not in the field is defending champion Jon Rahm, who bolted for the big bucks of the rival LIV Golf league. Also, 2022 champ Cameron Smith made the move leaving Harris English as the last winner of this event teeing it up this week on the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field as the betting favorite in the outright market in the no-cut tournament. The limited field with the game’s top players gives us intriguing head-to-head battles. Be sure to visit BookMaker.eu for a complete list of matchup betting odds when you’re ready to place a wager.

Need to Know
There are a few things to know ahead of the first tournament in 2024. First, the field is limited with only 59 entrants, though it’s the most ever, and everyone plays four rounds. Also, this is the first of eight signature events this season that include 700 FedExCup points to the winner and a larger prize pool. Everyone that has played this tournament in the past has done so at Kapalua Resort since it’s hosting for a 26th consecutive year. The Plantation Course was remodeled ahead of the 2019 edition stretching the distance to just under 7,600 yards, but that hasn’t been a major factor on the Tour’s only par-73 layout. In mild conditions two years ago three players finished 32-under or better and the course annually has one of the lowest to-par scoring averages. Mother Nature remains the biggest hazard, though, with coastal winds making things tricky.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Matchup Picks
Collin Morikawa +200 vs. Scottie Scheffler
I always seem to back Scheffler in the matchups but it’s hard to ignore Morikawa at this price. He’s coming off a nice season that saw him win the ZOZO Championship just a few months ago for one of his seven top 10s. He’s finished no worse than T7 in four starts here and probably feels that he has some unfinished business after last year’s collapse. He forfeited a 5-shot lead over the last 18 by shooting a 72 losing by two swings. Despite that he’s had plenty of success at this joint and the price is to my liking.
Ludvig Aberg +115 vs. Patrick Cantlay
There isn’t much Aberg hasn’t done in his brief career already with wins on the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. He was a monster in the fall winning at The RSM Classic along with a playoff loss among his four top 13s, which came after he helped the Europeans win the Ryder Cup. The betting markets haven’t caught up so backing Aberg at plus odds is a steal.
Xander Schauffele -120 vs. Max Homa
Schauffele didn’t win last season but finishing second in the FedExCup standings earned him an invite. He came close a few times finishing as runner-up twice with 11 of his 23 starts ending with a top 10. And he’s had success at Kapalua with a win in 2019 and runner-up the following year among his three top 5s in five starts. He was no worse than T22 in his other two appearances. He withdrew from last year’s event with a sore back so he may have added motivation.
Rickie Fowler +112 vs. Tony Finau
Fowler’s renaissance last season was inspiring. He played great golf just about every time out with only two MCs and eight top 10s in 26 starts. His strong season also got Fowler a return trip to Kapalua where he’s been solid in the past. The last of his four starts here resulted in a third straight top 10 in 2020. Things haven’t changed too much so I expect Fowler will feel right at home. And getting him at plus odds is a bonus.
Jordan Spieth -120 vs. Sungjae Im
Wide fairways and large greens play to Spieth’s strengths, and he’s shown in the past how that’s worked for him. His first four starts at Kapalua saw him finish among the top 10 each time with a win in 2016 and runner-up in 2014. He faded a bit last year after a hot start but still claimed a top 15, the first eight he had for the season.
