Is there a better place than Hawai’i to ring in the New Year? The PGA Tour doesn’t think so heading to the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort on the island of Maui for the 25th year for the playing of the Sentry Tournament of Champions. As the name suggests every player who won a 2022 tournament as well as those who cracked the top 30 in the FedExCup playoffs are eligible. The stacked field of 39 includes 17 of the top 20 players in the OWGR with Jon Rahm the betting favorite for a second straight year. Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy are the only eligible players not in this week’s field. Cameron Smith set a PGA record finishing 34-under to win last year’s edition. Smith defected to LIV Golf not long after winning The Open and won’t be defending his title. The three other major winners – Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick – are scheduled to peg it up. Odds Analysis
Max Homa +3500
One player who shined during the fall portion of the schedule, Homa built up his confidence with a win in Napa to open the season and was also part of the winning Presidents Cup team. Not bad for the month of September. He followed that with a couple of top-25s and stayed busy competing in the unofficial Hero World Challenge and QBE Shootout. He played well in this event last year earning a top-15 by going 20-under so he knows what to expect from the layout. And at this price it’s hard to ignore Homa and his improved play.
Viktor Hovland +2000
There are few players on Tour as consistently good as Hovland, and he closed out 2022 in style with a win at the unofficial Hero World Challenge. He was 18 of 21 last season with a win and runner-up among his five top-10s. He started the new season off with a T5 at the ZOZO and earned a T10 at Mayakoba. He hasn’t fared well here in two starts, but with this being a Ryder Cup year there’s added motivation to play well.
Collin Morikawa +2000
It’s hard to believe Morikawa didn’t win a tournament last season, but the relaxed eligibility requirements put in place during COVID allows him a chance to get a head start on the field. It’s not that Morikawa was bad with five top-5s last season, including a T5 in this tournament, so you could say he’s due. And he’s offered at a good price for the success he’s enjoyed in Hawai’i.
Jon Rahm +600
I don’t typically back the favorite, especially when he’s priced like Rahm is for this tournament. But it’s hard to argue anyone has been hotter than the Spaniard. His last four worldwide starts all ended with a T4 or better, including wins at the Open de Espana and the DP World Tour Championship. And he’s had success here capturing top-10s in all five starts with a pair of runner-up showings, including last year when he tied the course record and finished 33-under.
Sahith Theegala +5500
After putting up a fight for Tour Rookie of the Year, Theegala is back to try and improve on a season that saw him earn two runners-up among his seven top-10s. He’s making his debut at Kapalua, which could take an adjustment period. But there is no cut so he has time. And he has the all-around game to be successful on this course. I was hesitant at first, but the price is right.
Course: Plantation Course at Kapalua – 7,596 yards, par 73
The course has hosted this event since 1999 but underwent a major renovation ahead of the 2019 edition. Still, there weren’t many surprises for the field, though the redesigned course saw Justin Thomas produce the worst winning 72-hole score since 2006. The additional length is negated by elevation and by playing at par 73, and the layout is known more for its tricky lies with one hole going uphill and the next downhill. Golfers also have to contend with coastal winds, which are almost always a factor. In mild conditions last year the pros eviscerated the layout with Smith finishing a record 34-under par. Rahm finished a shot back at 33-under tying a PGA Tour record with 32 birdies for the week. For the most part the fairways are generous and the big sticks will be used over the four days.
